Hi Guys,
I'm having some backgrounds drawn up for a video but I don't know how big it has to be.
Has anybody generated backgrounds and know the dimensions to avoid pixels showing?
thanks in advance.

Computer drawing? If so, my son who does some of this uses 300 dpi in Photoshop and then scale in your NLE.

Do it at the same or slightly larger resolution as your final product. SD is 480x720, which Photoshop has a preset for, HD is higher depending on which you use. What that comes to depends on the originally size if you're scanning them in. For a letter sized 11x8.5 you want the 8.5 to be 720, which is a scan setting of 85DPI. So there's your minimum for SD.

I'd recommend to have your art work at least 2 to 3 times the ultimate resolution you are using for your output. In the case of NTSC/PAL that would be something like 2048x1360... for HD that would be 4096x2400 (or similar dimensions...)

This will allow you to adjust the size of the matte image if need be, without fear of showing artifacts.

The other issue that crops up in melding created images with 'live' action, is matching the 'noise' of the live action and applying that 'noise' to the created matte image.

I've not done to much in this regard, I just know it is an issue in trying to hide the fact that a matte was used.
