Greatest Natalie Portman movie

I think she's talented and has a decent body of work, but when does someone reach that level for a 'greatest' list? Do you need 20 films, 30 films, 50?

You could obviously make the point for a greatest Hitchcock film, 60+ creations, and some better than others, but isn't it weird to say what someone's best film is when they are still working? I think most people would say Harrison Ford's best role was Blade Runner, but who knows what will happen with this upcoming Indiana Jones film?

Maybe best lists are best left to people no longer living...

By the way, the deleted scenes for Episode 3 really show Natalie Portman's acting range... please don't take this comment seriously.

I think greatness comes from being iconic. You mention Harrison Ford and you think of Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and other great performances. Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver was iconic. Judy Garland in the Wizard of Oz. Audrey Hepburn. I don't think of Portman as having one of those unforgettable performances that not only defines her but makes her iconic. She's definitely talented, but she's also really hit and miss. She just seems like a really good contemporary actress. I think it's partly the film and partly talent. You don't need a lifetime of work either, just that one role that solidifies that quality. Brad Pitt had that with Fight Club.

Thoughts?

I don't know how much I would agree with you there. Certainly many of the actors on your list were "iconic" for more than one role or film. Taxi Driver...more iconic for DeNiro than Foster?

Do you have to be great to be iconic? What comes after iconic? Legendary?

I think greatness comes from consitency... always giving a good performance and not phoning it in...taking chances... going somewhere new with your character choices... Inevitably, a lot of these kind of actors will either stumble into a major movie that is a runaway hit and their face is synonymous with it or just continue to chameleon from role to role. A little too simplisitic, but you get the idea.

That said, I don't think Portman has demonstrated enough clear consistency to be considered "great". She's cute and often serviceable, sometimes not. Every now and then she shines.

Yeah whats up with this thread anyway? A Greatest Nataie Portman list? Huh? She hasnt even done anything yet. She's alright; nothing special.

How about the greatest Clint Howard role?

My vote goes to the character of Balok in Star Trek: TOS Season 1 Episode 10 " The Corbomite Maneuver".

Enjoy.

I'll post a super-lame picture I have of her somewhere from the Academy Awards last February as soon as I can find it . . .

I gotta disagree with you there. I could watch her read the phone book. That's special.

Enjoy.

That's the best damn thread hijack I've seen in a long time. I'm still laughing...
The voice dubbing in that was worse than any chop-socky movie I can recall.

I did enjoy Portman in Closer, but probably for the wrong (prurient) reasons.

But I agree that she doesn't really deserve her own thread, at least not here.
