Greatest movie gunfights of all time.

overlandfilms,

That car crash is Patriot Games does rock. The first one I saw from inside the car I think. Bourne Supremacy did it a few times too.

Okay John_Hudson,

I concede on Private Ryan... but they are fighting, with guns. If it is cinematography he is after, you can do a lot worse than study SPR.

American John Woo sucks. Hong Kong John Woo is God.

Check out "A Better Tommorrow 2". The last 10 minutes contain some of the greatest action gun fighting ever filmed. It makes Heat look like horse ****.

Also, I HIGHLY reccommend "The Wild Bunch". Second only to ABT2.

And, for that matter, just about any HK Woo film.

ABT
ABT2
The Killer
Hard Boiled
Bullet in the Head

Taxi Driver also kicks ass.

The Killer -- just about any of the action scenes
Hard-Boiled -- the climactic hospital seige sequence
Raiders of the Lost Ark -- the shoot-out at Marion's bar
Terminator -- Shoot-out in and escape from Tech-noir

True true.

Just trying to stay in the spirit of the 'Gunfight' question. Suddenly images of the Normandy Invasion come in; now that was a gunfight! :cheesy:  As much as I love the BEACH LANDING scene, the end fight is just a good I always thought.

I guess if I was going to 'shoot a shootout' I'd first diagram it out on paper. What happens? Where does it happen? Who is invloved? And then diagram the camera set-ups I want. Am I using a dolly or crane? Is this all verite? Locked down?

Yeah, actually I've been given the first draft of an action/thriller with a couple of gunfights and the director wants my input as he puts together the second draft. If all goes well will be shootiing in the late fall.

As far as war films go, SPR is great, but had more in mind crime drama films or westerns more than war flicks. Great suggestions so far. Gotta bone up on my John Woo for sure.

Thanks.

yeah, SPR is a different catogory (i prefer the final battle btw)

the only thing about woo's stuff is it's very stylized, so if ur going for something a little more realistic, crime drama stuff then Heat, Leon, and LA Con for me (so far)

Okay, that's clearer.

I think Collateral is one to watch. Tom Cruise sells it so well. Apparently he became quite a pistol marksman.

I have shot a few gunfights, with different levels of success. My tip is train the actors! There is a very specific way to fire a weapon correctly! The audience may not know how to do it, but they will also see if the actor doesn't.

Also, go paintballing! Take the whole crew! It will fill your head and theirs with ideas. It will also demonstrate what it feels like to be in a gunfight, minus the fear of death.

How about the Replacement Killers... Quigly Down Under... Hot Shots Part Duex... I'm kidding but not really at least on some level.

Replacement Killers, guns run out of ammo in real life and in the movies you just pull your third pair of 9mm from your waist.

Quigly Down Under, your dead then your buddy hears the report of the rifle. You ride as fast as you can then suddenly you fall from your horse. Then and only then do you hear the sound.

Hot Shots II, Charlie Sheen standing inside the mound of 50 cal. spent casings just after dad Martin passes by on his boat. Plus the energizer bunny scene. Come on pink polyester and bullets!

Some of my favorites have already been thrown out here.

I liked the one in Road to Perdition where Jude Law is in the hotel room firing down on Tom Hanks in the street.

Replacement Killes comes to mind.

My favorite stand off still has to be the staircase scene in Untouchables.

The Millers Crossing gunfight scenes were awesome too.

One was the police assault on the hideout, shot almost entirely as wide establishing shots and the second is when the hitmen try to take out Albert Finney, who calmly mows them all down wearing his silk robe and pyjamas.

That's hot.

A Fistful of Dollars.
The Good the Bad and the Ugly.
The Wild Bunch.

Yeah, I've been on a western kick lately. :)

"Sonatine" has some pretty wicked gun fights in there. Takeshi Kitano is one of the best filmmakers out there today. You shouldn't be dissapointed.

I think That the scene in "Face Off' set to the sound of music is the greatest! The "Matrix" Morphious rescue was also great but "The Way of the Gun' Scene by the empty fountain in the end was great!

Yeah, "The Wild Bunch", my total brain fart.... I think that the opening to "The Wild Bunch" rivals anything ever put on film, even the opening to "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and the ending is so iconic. I have had my head up my a** about this, "The Wild Bunch" is sitting on top of my TV right now.

This brings up my Peckinpah collection. "Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia" is an amazing movie and has several gunfights that are worth study. The scene where Robert Webber and Gig Young are introduced and they smack the sh*t out of that whore is classic. If anyone is not familiar with Sam Peckinpah, I highly recommend going to:

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001603/

and checking out the films. If you wonder who perfected the "death in slow motion" convention we are all used to seeing, it was Sam Peckinpah.

A filck that keeps coming up is "The Road to Predition". I have not seen it and am now inspired to check it out.

Thanks everybody, keep 'em coming please.

since everyones covered the woo stuff, someone tell me that watching antonio banderas demolish the bar in the opening scene of desperado isn't seminal gun fighting. Just shere, unadulterated bad assery.

I am in total agreement with Millers Crossing, it was great to see him roll out of his upstairs window, down the porch, to the ground and wait for that guy to walk up and the unleash a ridiculous amount of lead into his back!

Leon and Tombstone are some great ones too. And of course the classic gun fight of Good, the Bad, and the Ugly....*cough* Back to the Future 3 *cough* excuse me.

Another movie that has several good gun fight scenes is Equilibrium, the part at the beginning where Bale jumps through the door and "opens up shop" on the rebels.

A japanese action flick had some good shoot'em up moments, called Full-time Killers. I don't know if I would say best of all time, but some cool stuff.

Finally the last stand off in Battle Royale with the teacher. If you have seen the flick, you know what I mean...nothing fancy, more funny.

id agree with one from above ..although the film as a whole i found a little trite because of its pretentious claim on the cover to be"better than the matrix" and i was let down .. it wasnt the same type of film really , and shouldnt have been compared.. but anyway, i found the gun battles with th whole gun kata thing in "EQUALIBRIUM" to be unique and kinda cool in their own way.

Directed by Johnny To, a true master when it comes to action.

He also directed another awesome flick, "The Mission". It has some pretty badasss gun fights in there if memory serves me correctly.

I might also suggest a few more Kitano films. He is known as the
'action atuer (sp?)', and rightly so. After "Sonatine", check out "Violent Cop" and "Fireworks".

I'll try to think of some more in the mean time.
