the exorcist is so dam scary I won't even watch it. I've seen bits and pieces but will never see this film and have no desire to see clips of it again. honestly i'm just too dam scared. But I have seen Alien and the Shining and those films are awesome. The shining is scarier, though, I've never thought of Alien as a horror film.

I am a major Kubrick fan, but I gotta go with The Excorcist on this one. Saw it first run, after reading the book (which gave me nightmares for weeks). I was into filmmaking at the time with my non-reflex GAF Super8 camera and Bia viewer with rewinds and was a big fan of Dick Smith (Make-up artist on the flick). I talked my Dad into taking me and my best friend at the time, Tommy (he had a reflex Super8 camera with single frame, it was the ****) to see it. It scared the bejezzus out of me. The realistic style of the film was so right for the time and for the movie.

"Help out an old alter boy fadter"

Gotta say The Shining was a fun movie to go to also. Went to see it with my buddy Lloyd. When Jack goes into the gold ballroom, looks at the camera and says, "How you doing Lloyd?" My bro flipped out!!

Event Horizon is a scary movie, most people wouldn't think so because it's in space, but it was the way it was directed and the crietness of some scenes, till this day, I find it hard to watch, I have the DVD at home and for some reason I can't watch it again. The scene that always gets me is when they look at the footage of the previous crew, some hellish **** was going on... That movie is so underated, scary wise. That's my vote.

Damn, these are, mostly, all pretty good horror films. I think Halloween should be up there, too. The Excorcist and Halloween both scared the crap out of me when I was a kid. Even now, I sometimes freak myself out looking out a window at a clothesline and imagine Michael Myers standing there.

It's hard to pick an absolute, so, now in my life, it's a toss up between The Thing and The Shining. I read somewhere that Kubrick said The Shining was an uplifting film because anything that proved that there was life after death had to be a good thing.

Personally I think the Grudge was pretty scary too...

(by the way: Hi, I'm new :) )
I haven't seen it in the movies, since the dvd has just been out here in France, I have to watch it!!!!!!

The Shining by far.
I think it was brilliantly directed, and I am one of the few (don't shoot me) that thinks Kubrink is sometimes overrated at a filmmaker. Make no mistake, he made some great films (The Shining topping the list IMO)...but he also helmed just as many, or more, that were just ehhh-okay.

Have to give you credit for mentioning Event Horizon, though. Honestly, I thought I was the only one that found it quite frightening. Some scenes played out like an actual nightmare that was somehow captured on film.

While it is technically not a horror movie there are two pieces of film work that scared me more than anything else.

Does anyone remember the series 'Amazing Stories'? There was an episode that aired in maybe 1985 on Holloween where everytime this guy looked in the mirror he saw someone trying to kill him. That scared me more than anything, and for about six months after it aired I couldn't look in a mirror because I was so afraid. Then again I was like 8 years old at the time.

The other thing that scared me wasn't a horror movie but 'Dead Again' scared the hell out of me. I thought everyone in my life was someone I had screwed over in a past life.

Audition - 1999 - Japanese horror by Takashi Miike

Tenebre - 1982- Dario Argento

American horror movies pale by comparison.

What about the Amityville Horror (the new one)? I found it to be quite thrilling and better due to the original storyline of the real events

I have to go with Alien although we were at the drive in when Friday the 13th came out and when some assholes banged on the van door .......
How many remember the theaters giving out paper brown bags for movie goers when they went to see "The Exorcist" in case they were sick. The twisting of the head was way before it's time .

Does anybody remember THe H MAN from 1959 . I saw this on our neighbours colour T.V sometime around 1965 I think . That blue goop that consumed people was nasty . One of the only bits that I still remember was when they boarded the ship and NO ONE was on board ..where did they go? then comes the goop ...
Pretty mild today but when your a small lad and at that time I never heard of the BLOB..
