Great news for terrible sound people! Zynaptiq - removes reverb.

Don't like placing a mic correctly?
Tired of taking your shotgun off of the camera, just to get intelligible dialog?
Did you record a speech with your Zoom in a canyon half a mile away?

Zynaptiq to the rescue!

AU plugin only now. Introductory price 269.00 until July where it will go to 399.00

I just found this:

Hmmmmm....Seems interesting..but....I'd have to try it out myself. Did he mention something that it can analyze the reverb of one file and apply it to another. That could actually be handy for A/B cuts in a dialogue scene.

At $399 US this plugin could pay for itself the first time it needs to be used and what with the demo out Monday (according to the video) it's worth a shot!

Well, it looks intriguing. They are at MusicMesse, and I have a friend there now. I am going to reach out to him and see if he can get me an NFR of it.

Looking forward to hearing what info you can reconnoitre. ;)

When I saw it I couldn't help but think, "Great news when I have to work with sound from terrible sound people!" So a big thanks to Chad for the link/heads up!

I imagine there have been a few technologies over the years that were sufficiently indistinguishable from magic when they were first demonstrated.

From the site, there is a trial version available. I've not downloaded it, but if it is an 'april fools' item... they are going to specially great lengths. They also have another product wherein they claim to be able to change pitch on 'individual' instruments, and change mood and key of music...

Their descriptions include 'dsp' and 'artificial intelligence'... which may mean that some how they've gotten some sort of processing that is better than brute force deconvolution, and also does better with resulting noise from the dsp operations.

And of course, of course, may have limitations such as removing a 'dominant' echo/reverb element, but may not be able to deal well with reverb from multpath, randomly phase changed audio...

The ability to adjust polyphonic recordings has already been invented by Celimony, with their Melodyne app. You can record a guitar strum, or piano chord, then change one of the notes. I imagine this could be helpful in removing an unwanted noise that's stepping on a dialog track. But also you can take a symphonic recording, and change it from say a major key to minor. This too is like magic. I imaging this new plug-in takes dome code from the Melodyne plug.

Need to remove wow & flutter from old tape recordings?

I actually have melodyne. It's pretty good on light pitch correction and creating melodies/harmonies. But stepping on things too hard has disastrous effects.

It's decent for music, but for complex waveforms like vocals, it's touchy.

But melodyne is designed for vocals Doc. Do you mean "dialog" vs singing? Melodyne is probably the best vocal tuner out there IMO.

LOL, yes. I used to have a pretty good recording rig in my studio. And melodyne was good up to a point on vocals (singing). Actually it was designed more for music. But adapted to vocals, when they refined the codecs and programming. You should have heard the first version when you played with vocals. Yikes.

I think when you don't have to use it graphically, AutoTune Evo sounds quite natural. I like the editability of Melodyne, but I only have an older version, pre DNA, and only for PC.

I wonder how auto tune would do on singers like Joni Mitchell or Carly Simon who like to purposefully slide notes in jazz-like phrasing. Of course, using auto tune on Joni or Carly is tantamount to blasphemy. The whole auto tune thing...I prefer listening to people who can actually sing. LOL!

These tuning plugs do a good job of ignoring jazzy slides when in "auto" mode, and when editing graphically one can ignore most of a performance, and just tune one note, or phrase. But you can also make anyone sound like T-Pain, using the plug as an effect rather than a tool.

I was being somewhat facetious. No one in their right mind would use auto tune on a voice like Carly Simon's.

So I gave the demo of Zynaptiq's Unveil a whirl.

While it shows promise, the demo is so insulting and confrontational that I uninstalled it within about 5 minutes.

It has at least three pop-up windows when the AU host loads, another three or so when you try to load the plugin, AND despite one of those noting you can only use it for 10 minutes or so at a time (which is fine) it repeatedly pops-up additional demo-ish warnings every 30 seconds or so. This in addition to the demo warnings when you install the thing.

I've tried a lot of demo plugins that were much more expensive and/or essential without any of the nagging involved here. I can appreciate protecting one's products but this type of behaviour makes it hard to separate the evaluation from the nuisance and, unfortunately paints an ugly picture of how the company imagines the "end user" to be.

Sure, I'm drawing a lot of conclusions from the demo, but they are what they are and it certainly didn't entice me to try it out at any great length to really see its worth. Considering this product comes from a relatively unknown, unproven company, let's hope they change it to a simple 7, 10, or 30 day limited version without the popups. This is all fixable, but at the moment, it's hard to evaluate the evaluation-version without wanting to smash your head into a wall, with or without reverb.

You should tell them that. Or ask to be a tester (if it's something you may use) for feee copies. New companies love it when you help them troubleshoot.

Good point Chad. While I'm not looking for a free plugin, I did spend the few minutes to write out my concerns via their support form.

It literally was an "attack" of pop-ups and I did feel compelled to react. I even made a silly screen-capture video of all the pop-ups in case I had to defend my P.O.V. but I'll wait for their response before disparaging an otherwise promising product further. It is, after all, day 1 of the demo.

I was just surprised that a demo about a feature-set centered on "focus" lacked so much of it. ;)
