Hey folks,
Thought I should let people know about the new tabletop dolly / slider I put together from Modern Studio Equipment here is Los Angeles. I went in last week and they had the carriage running on 5/8" tubes. Looked great. I recommended an aluminum spreader and this week they have put the packages together!
This is a great solution for me as I was looking to make a small dolly or slider but didn't want to spend that much time or money doing it. I got this setup at a discount because I was the first one to get one and helped them with suggestions on the design, but they are going to sell them for right around $200.
The system is quite versatile - you can have the carriage run on the top of the rails or under-sling it below them (this way if someone bumps the carriage it will not topple of the rails. You can buy the rails in lengths from 1' to 6'. You can set the rail system on the floor, table, on apple boxes, chairs, whatever you have. Also, the aluminum spreaders are threaded and you can get adapters that fit right onto C-stands. With one C-stand on either end it feels a bit wobbly, so apple boxes or four C-stands are your best bet (see pics). I also thought of getting two 5' step ladders ($40 each), and using those - 5 steps equals 5 different heights, and then you can augment that with sandbags, etc.
The setup is quite sturdy - enough for an HVX and adapter (although I haven't shot with one on it yet, as it is brand new). The longer the rails, the more chance of bowing in the middle a bit. It is surprisingly strong though. And super compact and easy to transport!

That is a Cartoni Focus head mounted on it, and the videos were just taken with a Canon SD800 point and shoot.
Enjoy the tip!
