"Great" Movies that Suck

I apologize if this thread has been done before. If it has, mods, please feel free to delete it. Anyway, there's nothing like expecting to see a great movie, after all the buzz you've heard about it, really expecting to be wowed, and then ... huh, wha ..?OMG ... just a major disappointment, and befuddlement as to how this movie ever received so many good reviews. This thread is inspired by a "great" movie I just watched for the first time: Short Cuts. I'm shocked at how bad this movie is. I sat through 3 hours of this boring pointless mess. It's almost as bad as any soap opera on tv. Some of the acting was so bad it was funny, like Lyle Lovett or Matthew Modine (when he was trying to be angry at Julianne Moore for cheating on him). Some of the acting was pretty good but the only truly bright acting moment in this movie was Jack Lemmon confessing an infidelity to his son. So what do you guys think of Short Cuts? And what other "great" movies have you seen that are close to awful?

I loved Short Cuts, but most of my pals felt the same way. It's weird, that always seems to be the film everyone says, I expected the best and all I got was this...

Anyway, as far as films that were fulll of hype, and that I really wanted to be good, but fell fat and simply sucked, I guess I'd say, Independence Day, Fantastic Four, Green Mile, Rocky IV, The Patriot...and the list goes on. I mean that's what I get for heading into popcorn movies expecting important cinema. Live and learn.

It's worse though when you go see a hyped Indie and it sucks. I don't know, I just hold them to a higher standard than studio Hollywood faire, even though the budgets are smaller. Know what I mean? Damn dissapointing.

American Beauty comes to mind when I think of supposedly "great" movies that sucked. That's just my opinion of course. Oh well, to each their own.

The Way We Were

I watched this with my ex fiance after hearing it was the greatest love story and most romantic film (hoping to use it to get some post break up lovin'), but this movie just sucked. Not only did it not serve its intended purpose that night, we just sat there watching this crap film that was boring, stupid, and did nothing for entertainment.

EDIT:

I can't believe Hudson didn't like Fight Club... That still boggles the mind beyond belief.

I have to go with American Beauty. It just didn't speak to me on any level. I loved The Constant Gardener, John, but I suppose you feel about it the way I do about American Beauty.

I thought 2001: A Space Odyssey was great when I first saw it in the theater when it originally came out. But with the passage of time it has not aged well for me and I kind of agree with you on that one.

And The English Patient, OMG I hated it. And just within the last year another movie I personally didn't care for was Capote.

Isnt that weird ? Yet we both like beer.

I've made my defense for American Beauty in the Best Films of 1999. I really think that is a brilliant film that completely captures that feeling of confusion and misdirrection and our attempts to rectify that within each of us. I still appreciate that film for all of it's nuances and the brilliance associated with it.

That being said, Gladiator is also on my list. I think that it is just not a good film and the idea that this wanna be summer blockbuster won best picture frustrates me to no avail.

I think so

Connie Nielsen is smoking in that film. Phoenix just blows away anything River ever did in that and Crowe is just a man's man.

You refuse to watch Brokeback, but yet you got a thing for Crowe

Hey, it's my opinion on Gladiator, completely over hyped in my opinion.

On another note though I'm suprised that no one has mentioned Citizen Kane yet...

Personally I like the story, I love the cinematography, even the acting performances, but I think one of the reasons why I like the film is because I know I almost have to like it. If I had never taken a film class or known anything about filmmaking I would most likely think it is the most boring film ever made.

And let the :kali: begin

For what it did and the advances it made at the time, I thought is was a good movie. But to watch it for the story does bore me to death.

I respect your opinion about American Beauty.

I agree with you 100% about Gladiator.

Amelie is another one. I'll admit I liked certain parts, I adored the music, but as a whole...highly overrated IMO.

I'm glad you laughed, didn't know if I was skating banning territory or not.

I could really go on all night with the films that just suck but are meant to be great. What about:

Fever Pitch. C'mon, who wants to watch a film about an event that never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never took place.

I think Titanic is way overrated, but doesn't really happen to fall into 'sucks' territory.

I think that Clerks sucks and yet people claim that Kevin Smith is a diety.

I think that Pearl Harbor is a piece of crap film that goes beyond the definition of sucking into Hoover territory.

I think that, well, most films suck.

Amelie is one of those MUST SEE films that I just havent seen yet

ON a side note; I am watching Gladiator now and the opening battle has ZERO reverse shots. It is all from a staged perspective with the trees as a background

Weak.
