Great, easy and cheap way to learn lighting!

Hello fellow DVXusers,

I'm not sure if anyone has had this idea before, but today i found a great new way to learn lighting that's cheap and hassle free!

Theres this mod for Valve's half life 2 called Garry's Mod, which is linked http://gmod.garry.tv/ , and its great coz it allows you to spawn characters and place lights everywhere and stuff. Thus you can use its sandbox like gameplay to place lights where you want and thus learn how to light stuff - without the hassle of getting hot real lights down to any location with actors and stuff. Of course this is no subsitute for the real thing, but its a great way for theory of lighting, etc. Also, its great for storyboarding - no drawing required, just pose the actors how you want and light. You can even create locations in the mod to match the locations you'd have on the set, and thus you'll be able to test out how you wanna light a scene - all from the comfort of your home PC!

here are a few screenshots i took while playing with it this afternoon(sorry for the bad posing, and worse lighting...I'm new to this but...hey, we're all learning!)

Well, granted its never the same as the real thing, but not everyone has a full light kit and the time to set up and go to locations and get actors, etc. I'm just a 16 year old student, so those are luxuries i don't have...so i guess i have to make do with what i can get.
