Gravity doesn't exist.

actually in a completely unrelated matter, i was banned from eBay a while back for trying to sell 'BRAND NEW OEM LARGE HADRONS-UNCOLLIDED', 'HIGGS-BOSON MAGIC MULTIPLYING PARTICLES' and '4000LB DARK MATTER' as a practical joke based around a physics discussion on another board.

That hardly seems fair, considering that they would have been happy to help you sell a chunk of toast with a person's likeness vaguely burned into it...

agreed. i used to be on a car forum, and shortly after the whole grilled cheese incident went down, i went to work forging my own likeness as well as that of my car and the clubs logo onto several grilled cheese sandwiches. i did manage to actually sell one of those on eBay, why they left those up i have NO idea.

i went through a phase of testing the limits of what eBay would allow one to sell, i tried to sell my bragging rights, a 'photon cannon' which was simply a cheap flashlight that i wrote things up like 'bombard your enemies with the power of photons' which was taken down and i was warned over, tried to lease my soul out, tried to sell my voting power, tried to sell my happiness, etc. but it was the physics related sales that pushed it over the edge. my professors loved it, i did a paper on the whole incident for a psychology class, and generally it was pretty hysterical. i had classmates asking questions like 'how MANY higgs-boson particles are included or are they all the same one?' etc.

My questions:
How many higgs-boson particles can dance on the head of a hadron?
Isn't it a scientific impossibility to prove something doesn't exist?
Re religion- why do you think it's called "faith"?
Is there a doc to be made in Zissou's ebay testing?

1) Depends upon which hadron we're talking about, and at what energy levels it turns out Higgs Bosons appear

2) Not a scientific impossibility but an evidentiary one

3) Because it doesn't involve verification-of-claims by evidence, by experiment, or by anything else

4) Hopefully

That is why (to avoid being banned from eBay) I have selected to do my PhD (more than ten years ago now) in lower energy physics (quantum optics - laser cooling of atoms). Had to deal with a lot of photons and gas atoms there but thankfully no hadrons.

1) I think it's the rumored, but never seen, rare angel hadron
2) Good distinction, thanks
3) Merriam-Webster- "faith" : firm belief in something for which there is no proof
4) Soon

It seems discussion of the world on the extreme macro/micro ends of the scale (cosmic/sub-atomic) most often brings up the mention of religion, doesn't it?

Discussing most anything unknown seems to bring up the whole religion thing. It's still the first plug people tend to reach for to fill a gap, particularly in difficult technical areas in which they are not well-versed, whether it's remotely the right shape or even made of a suitable material, or not.

But alas Einstein did not succeed in creating a consistent Unified Field Theory, which there is some degree of hope that String- or M-theory might eventually yield.
