Graphics Card w/GPU Acceleration for Vegas/Photoshop

I recently upgraded to a new computer and based on (apparently incomplete) research I did I ordered it with an AMD ATI Radeon 5700 graphics card. The specifications stated that it supported GPU acceleration, something I confirmed with AMD this morning.

However, when I try to implement GPU acceleration in Vegas Pro 11 under Options/Preferences/Video my graphic card does not show up. I am using the most up-to-date drivers.

Besides Vegas I also do a lot of Photoshop work, and I never do gaming

Can anyone recommend a Vegas/Photoshop compatible graphics card that will enable me to use GPU acceleration. Price is an issue, so I am not looking for the top of the line, just one that will do a good job. I also need it t support 1920 x 1080 HD, dual monitors and have HDMI ports.

Thanks,

Dan

I am suprirsed that nobody answered your question, but I'll swoop in and hopefully help you with this.

From what I understand, Vegas only takes advantage of Nvidia cards with CUDA cores. The more cores, the better. I personally own a MSI GTX560Ti (it's an overclocked version of the base card)... mostly for gaming, but also for editing and rendering. You should be able to get away with any card in the current GTX line, as long as it has CUDA cores as previously stated. I would recommend getting a more up to date card (GTX540 and upwards) as these would give the best performance.

Hopefully I caught you before you bought your AMD card! :)

Vegas will use any OpenCL card from Nvidia or ATI (AMD).

Adobe's Mercury Playback Engine takes advantage of CUDA cores.

Dan, when you say price is an issue, what ballpark are we talking about ?

In the Sony GPU Acceleration web page I listed above, one of the cards they are using is the AMD 6870 GPU, which costs about $160+ at NewEgg. If you can afford it, I would start with this card.

I have a very similar version of this one, and so far, with 1GB DDR3 memory, it doesn't help that much. The CPU is still working hard when rendering (from what I've tested with Vegas 11). So I'm still using Vegas 8.0.

After doing a little more research I figured out that the card I have, the ATI Radeon 5700 will work with GPU Acceleration in Vegas if I reverted back to an earlier version (11) of the driver. I did that and it appears to be working fine, at least the card shows up in the Vegas GPU Acceleration option list.

Thanks,

Dan
