Graphics Card in mac

In order to update the graphics card in my mac pro (early 2008 model) is my only option the ATI Radeon HD 5770??? Bought a EVGA 550 TI, but didn't work. I really don't feel like putting in a bunch of code and hacking my mac. Just want something that works.
 
If you're running Lion, then the GTX 500 series cards are supposed to work with the new Cuda drivers. More info at Nvidia's web site.
