Shot on DVX in 24p Advanced. Editing in FCP and outputted to DVD Studio Pro. WHen watching the uncompressed AVI of the film on a color TV monitor hooked up to the computer, it looks pretty good. When outputting to DVD, it doesn't. Esp. the nighttime scenes. I have tried 1-pass VBR and 2-pass both with similar results. The blacks in the nighttime have that blocky look like when you watch a movie on a bad pay cable channel like encore. There is noticeable grain and gain in the nighttime scenes which I had pretty much fixed in a color correction session.
Also, I added a 2.35 matte to the 1.85 I shot with and for the most part, it looks correct. But, in the night scenes, the extension of the 2.35 from the 1.85 letterbox is a lot lighter in color making it obvious that I added the matte.
any ideas on different compression schemes to try, different programs, professional outputting, etc?
thanks
Jeff
