What type of look would you call this? monochromatic unsaturated?

And did light gels play a role into the final colour or did they just white balance for the light and colour it in post?

Also, the 7d doesn't allow you to shoot raw & shoot in whatever desired settings you want unlike the red. So how do I know what I am shooting will turn out the way I want it to?

How did they execute the parts where the light moves during the shot? Did the use cookies infront of the lights while moving them? It's hard to imagine getting the same effect by simply moving the light. What is a legit / safe way of doing this?

desaturated for sure, tinted to a bluish hue...

I hate third party plugins, but honestly I have to say after giving it a try magic bullet is a great way to learn how to "grade". You can start with presets and turn individual settings on and off that combined make the overall look. Download the trial version and give it a try.

Here's a good post on how to shoot so you can get the most of your grading later: http://prolost.com/blog/2010/1/26/color-correcting-canon-7d-footage.html

- Shoot flat
- Expose well
- Choose neutral white balance

As for knowing how it will turn out before you shoot? Practice and experience.

I suspect the lights are moved on large booms, not an uncommon method, just use professional gear instead of broom sticks duct taped together and your actors, equipment and set will be safe.

I agree, Magic Bullet Looks is great for looking at presets and seeing how they were built - turning off individual effects to see how each affects the image, and what happens to the image when they are layered. One of the most interesting things to me is changing up the order of which each effect is applied, and studying how something as seemingly simple as that can have a drastic (or subtle) impact on your final image.
