Gradient mask in Premiere CS5

Hi,
does anybody know, if it´s possible to apply an effect on the video with gradation of some of the effect parameters? For example, gradient of blur, where at the begining, blur = 0 and in the end of the gradient 10 for example? (fake DOF etc.)
I know it´s possible in After effects but I´m trying to make as much work as I can in Premiere, without messing around between these two :)

Assigning a blur keyframe value of zero at the start of the clip and a value of ten at the end of the clip will cause the whole clip to be "in focus" at the start and gradually get "out of focus". To simulate a depth of field effect without using AF, duplicate the clip and apply the reverse keyframe values to it. With the two clips stacked, use the garbage matte on the upper clip to define the area(s) you wish to be affected by the blur change.

This works fairly well, depending on the frame's composition and motion. It's far from perfect though. There's probably better ways to do it but this worked for what I wanted to do.

There's no gradient effect in Premiere and garbage matte does not allow you to feather the edges of the mask so it's not going to look good since there'll be a hard division on the mask edge.

well you can superpose 2 tracks (one blurred and the original) and use the gradient mask as transparency mask

There is a way to feather a Garbage Matte, but a build-in one would be beter. Please file a Feature Request is you think this a good feature.

Drop the Garbage Matte on a white Color Matte, add Fast Blur (or Gaussian Blur which is MPE effect) and use this as a Track Matte in track 3. In track two the duplicated clip with the desired effect.

You can also draw a gradient mask in the Titler with the Pentool, make it a filled bezier and set it to 4 Color Gradient. Make it all white. Set the top color e.g. to 50% and the bottom ones to 0%. Or the left top 75%, the left bottom and right top to 50% and the right bottom to 0%. You can make any combination. Drop a Fast Blur (or Gaussian) and use it as a track Matte in track 3. In track two you superimpose the duplicated clip and add the effect you want.
A Garbage Matte can be animated, a mask drawn in the Titler cannot.
