i am in the process of editing a tribute video and i noticed the audio in a couple of the dvds i was given only has sound coming out of one speaker. i have soundtrack pro and i tried to make an .aif file and mix it so as to pan one of the tracks to the other speaker but i can not get it to work. the original waveform i have is in stereo but only one of the channels has a waveform. any ideas how i can copy one side to the other to make at least the same sound coming out of two speakers?

thanks and hope that makes sense to someone.

You just need to pan the one that has sound to the center. You can do that in FCP, it's probably easier.

IN FCP you can select the audio clip, then go under the Modify menu and uncheck "Stereo Pair", which makes each channel it's own mono file. So you can delete the unused channel off the timeline in case it adds any noise, then must pan the good channel to the center, or make a copy and use both of your levels are too low.

and also: stereo NEVER exists if it's recorded only with one mice...

Stereo = left and right has different information.

For example a orchestra recorded in XY or AB (method of stereo recording) would be stereo. The flute would sound left, the violin right, the trumpet somewhere in the middel (EXAMPLE).
You'll hear it true your speakers as flute left, violing right, trumpet middle.

If it would have been recorded with only one mice... it would all sound from the middle because of the "ghost center". But in stereo it would give a "wider" effect then in mono
Stereo = 2 tracks, with one track panned left and the other one panned right. Mono would be one track panned in center.

Dialogues come out of the center, so they're mono, so they come out of the "ghost center" or center speaker in 5.1 surround.

If you have now dialogues coming out from the center and the orchestra in stereo (with the flute left, the violin right) you can more easaly level up the dialogue without "interupting" to much the orchestra

Well now by that definition he has stereo;~)
Actually what he said was correct, he did have a stereo display, he just didn't have a stereo recording.

But all good points.

BTW, "mice" in english is plural for a small rodent. "mic" would be the correct abbreviation, though I have been given grief for it.
