Got my Mic!!! Now what?

I am now the proud owner of a Sennheiser ke64 mic.
The thing rocks.

BUT... I know it's more than just plug and play.

I read the db on the DVX100a must be turned down to -10 or so. But I can't see any other options except -50 or -60db

What should I do?

I will be filming outside most the time.
Current settings on the side are:
CH 1 Select - set to Input 1
Ch 2 Select - set to INT(r)

And I will be filming a rap show next week in a club fitting about 150 people.

Thanks alot

-Phil

Now, me, I put the mic in Channel 2 and set Channel 1 to Input 2 also.

Set one of the channels at 50 and the other at 60.

Assuming the incoming sound isn't too too hot or cold, you've got a 10db window to play around in.

Well, I'm getting a 66 later on. I just wanted an all around mic and am happy with the 64. I rented it previously and was happy with it. So was the client and the type of work I did with it, so that's what I went with.

As for putting the mic into channel 2, why not in 1?
Thnx for the imput.

Re: Got my Mic!!! Now what?

You can only set ch 2 for input or internal mic. Read the manual

Re: Got my Mic!!! Now what?

ill sudgest that you would forget the 66 and go for something more plesent - remember when you have only one k-6 you have only one mike

Re: Got my Mic!!! Now what?

Not having used any of the K6 modular mics I can only speak of what I have heard about their specs. They are said to be tremendously hot so you might want to set your input to -50 to compensate.

Re: Got my Mic!!! Now what?

You probably won't be able to use that mic with the inputs at -60db... it'll be WAY too loud and a gnat fart will blow the inputs. The -60db setting is for dynamic (ENG) mics and other insensitive mics... If you had a -35db setting on the DVX you'd probably even go to that with the me64. Since you don't, you can confidently know that -50db is the best option for what you have available.

I would set both mic inputs to -50db and then plug your mic into ch.2 and set both inputs to ch.2... then set the dials so that one channel just "kisses" 3 reds for average peaks and set the other channel 2 dots (seen around the dials) below it... Like this the other channel won't even light a red at all on normal peaks, but if your subject suddenly laughs or yells... or if some other loud sound comes in... you'll have someplace to go in post.

So now back in post you just run ch.2 and duplicate it the whole time... if there is never a loud sound or harsh peak that needs to be controlled then you're done! Easy! But if there IS some loud sound and you notice that the audio distorts (with ALC on it takes a pretty loud hit to do that) then you can slice in a bit of ch.1 for that loud passage (and duplicate THAT) and then go back to your ch.2 afterward. Simple no?

That's how the pros do it when they've got to mix audio from 1 mic into 2 channels.
