gorilla style tactics

if your shooting gorilla style - no permits - can a city come after you and sue when they see part of their town on the big screen later?

i know about the human part of getting release forms, and the recoure they have if you dont, but i dont know about citys.

like if i jump out of my car and film a scene in front of the Staples Center, hop back in and scram, my flick is awesone, gets major distribution, has a opening at Graumans Chinease, and the city realizes i shot downtown with no permit, am i toast?

no, they cant do anything at all about it. But there are some festivals out there that prohibit advertisement so if you have a long clip where the word Staples is very visible onscreen then they festival might not accept it because they can classify that as advertisement. So read up on your festivals before you enter. Good luck man.

It all depends on who you show and if you make money with it or not. For the most part, you're cool. Landmarks, building, highways, public areas, parks etc...all fine. Any company name or logo or something like that is iffy. It all boils down to the amount of money you make with it, these days. If you get paid...people will start showing up, looking for their cut.
If you think you might need a location agreement, you probably do.

i think the permit is just so the cops won't stop you from filming outdoors. if you're a small crew and not shutting down traffic or waving around fake guns, they probably won't care. if you shoot indoors at a location, i think film festivals might ask for a location release. you need the owner of the building to sign it, not the tenant. also if your film is going to be shown on tv, or picked up for distribution or anything, they'll ask for all releases and stuff. one more thing - if you want to get production insurance, you'll need a permit. LA sucks for that. in NY, permits are free, they'll give you cops to watch over while you shoot for free.
