Google This, Google That

Why is google so popular? I just realized today that it's all I use, but I remember when there used to be infoseek, hotbot, yahoo was maily a search engine, altavista. Anyone remember these? They're still around, but people don't use em. Everyone always says "Google it." Why did it get so popular? The term Googling has seem to mean "to search the internet."

Just an observation.

Re: Google This, Google That

Never even heard of that. Perhaps I'm wrong on this one.

Re: Google This, Google That

I still use Yahoo. I'm not sure, but I thought at one time Yahoo and Google were the same company (?).

Re: Google This, Google That

i think it helps that the google page is so uncluttered, so simple...its only got a hand full of links, its only ment for one thing. and the photo search put it above the others to i think. i duno..i love google..i use the google toolbar dozens of times a day...its even my home page even though i have the google toolbar...i dunnoo...

oh, and as soon as you get on the google site...your cursor is already waiting for you to type something...so its just one less click...just go to google and start typing...its really smart.

Re: Google This, Google That

Not only is Google no-nonsense with an uncluttered page, the uncluttered page makes it load lightning quick, espcially compared to most of today's bloated, graphics-intensive sites. It makes a good homepage.

And yes, Yahoo's search engine has for a while been just Google with Yahooey stuff applied to it.

Re: Google This, Google That

Google is in danger of losing their trademark, if it becomes a generic term for using a search engine.

I can't think of any other product which ended up that way so quickly.

Re: Google This, Google That

I use Dogpile because it queries several search engines, including Google, and reports all the results from each.

Re: Google This, Google That

..i used to used search.com all the time, i started using google a while ago.. i use either one now.

Re: Google This, Google That

I can't stop Yahoo'ing...

Everytime I go to search for something I Yahoo.com....

People always tell me Google is better, but i'm so used to it now.

Re: Google This, Google That

Yahoo uses Google search results. So if you search on Yahoo, you're just searching on Google.

Actually, I think they just had sort of a bad breakup earlier this year, trying to find the article now...

EDIT: Here they are, it happened Q1 of this year...

Re: Google This, Google That

needless to mention that I also keep on using google ever scince I answered that e-mail and now I recieve 12c for every search I make cause Microsoft is so wealthy this was a great was to share their fortune . . . Bill thought ;)

Re: Google This, Google That

as to why google is so popular, Goggle's bots were the first to consider the number of links to a site. In other words if you're searching for DVX100A, and if DVXUSER.com has more sites linking TO it than DVINFO.NET (for instance), Google ranks it higher for this reason (among others) due to popularity.

Re: Google This, Google That

I just found this out... since Google went public, it has DOUBLED it's revenue. I don't know the exact figure. Suffisive to say that it is HUGE.
