Something iv never understood is how google ratings work. I use to be about 3 pages back when searching "cinematographer in philly" but I am now the first one. Does anyone know what could have changed?

Either the people at the front of their class changed their website or you changed yours (and by change I mean the bodies of texts changed to include less search-imperative information).
If you didn't change anything on your website and they didn't change anything on theirs, my next best guess would be links (e.g. you're getting more people linking to your website than did previously).
