Does anyone know how long it takes before something no longer shows up on a Google search?

If I have webpage, and on that page is the word "Hooglmooglboot" (just for this example) and it is the only page in the universe that has that word. So it ends up at the top of a Google search.

Now, If I take that word off the webpage, how long before it will no longer show up on a search?

So... how often do they "crawl" sites?

Yeah. depends on the frequency that a site gets crawled. A site like DVXuser for example gets crawled quite often. Maybe every other day or so, but it may take longer than that for a cached version to be removed/updated.

My site on the other hand does not get crawled very often at all, and changes I make to it don't show for several weeks sometimes.

Are you familiar with pbase.com? It's a fairly big site. That is the site in question.

did a google search for pase and clicked "cached" on the first hit, which was the homepage for that site. It's cache was generated just today as a matter of fact.

EDIT: other parts of the site were cached on the 15th, the 10th, and so on.

To prove how fast Google updates their searches, I just searched for "Hooglmooglboot" and this thread showed up as the only result...

They are.

Strangely, after removing the word from the webpage, and contacting Google and asking them to remove the page from their listing (and they confirmed they did), the page is still coming back as the first search listing.

Grrr.
