Google Ad Words

For you freelance/small business video production people out there. Have you used Google Ad Words? If so, did you see a jump in people looking for your services? Thinking of investing some dough into this and wanted to see how well it works. Thanks.

My experience was that my budget got maxxed out every single day (by people clicking the ad), almost, for the month and a half I had a campaign up. I got, at the same time, not a single inquiry.

Spending money on marketing without putting a properly researched plan in place is just a more involved way of pouring gas on your cash and putting a lit match to it.

Anyone have any suggestions on what does work? I've never heard anything good about AdWords but I would like to expand my presence online this year and be more aggressive about pursuing opportunities for work rather than waiting for them to come to me.

I have a free profile on mandy and productionhub but haven't seen any action from either.

The most impactfull marketing I ever do tends to be the cheapest or free routes. A trick is to really figure out who your target market is, don't be too generic (thats not to say you shouldn't have a broad range of services but you should position yourself for each market you are targeting. Figure out what your target clients are searching when they are looking for video production and also what they are searching in general (be sure to include location), see the first hits that come up and determine if there are any opportunities to advertise there. Take a look at your direct competitors and see what they are doing (copy them if it makes sense) Make sure that anywhere you are advertising, be it print or online that you have a an easy way to get to your website and view your work with the least clicks possible (this is really important). Finallly, make sure you are tracking and analyzing where your clients are coming from. Embedd google analytics into your website and if someone calls or emails you, find out how they heard about you. If they book you, highlight it. Within a year or two you should have a really good sense of the best places to spend your time and money advertising.
