aha, there you go - the sanken is just a lot thicker... i can say i find those rubbery kevlar cables to be better with resisting cable noise, over a normal plastic type cable...
I shoot most stuff where it is ok to see the lav or earset. Even where the actor is stationary and a boom will work, the lav is much, much, much better at picking up only the actor's voice and rejecting all the studio noise. There may be shotguns that have good ambient noise rejection, but not my AT 4073. It will pick up a mouse fart in the next room.
In my experience, dynamic mics seem to produce the best results for isolating voices in a noisy environment. My favorite all around voice mic is the EV 635A because it allows some ambient sound and still provides a rich voice pickup. Of course the problem is that it is not practical unless you want a mic visible in the scene.
The lavs/earsets seem to deliver close to the same rich voice recording, and I can hide those. They pick up only what is relatively close by...key in an environment where there is ambient noise that may overwhelm the sound track (restaurant scenes, outdoors, studio broadcast, ENG, etc.)
The shotgun is really convenient to reach across on a pole for crowded interviews as well as closed studio (where I can control the noise). I know I'll get some reaction by those of you that use shotguns because they do isolate conversations; however, they also seem to pick up ambient sound. When I turn down the sensitivity and get closer with the AT4073, it doen't pick up as much ambient noise...but the richness seems to fade as well. Getting closer does improve that.
