Good use for AT 40743A

Hey folks:

I just bought an AT 4073A shotgun, but I am finding that a lot of you are using lapel mics for interviews. I would really like not having to buy another mike for talking head interviews. Will my AT do a good job? If so, should it be placed above, below, or to the side of the talent? Thanks in advance.

It should be placed wherever it sounds best. Generally, that is above the talent and slightly angled towards the mouth. However, only consider this a guideline and do what sounds best to your ears. If you don't already have a C-Stand, now would be a good time to buy. Also, a boom pole holder would be a good idea. If you need to hang a mic on the cheap, use one of those microphone boom stands sold at guitar stores and make sure it's weighted with a shop bag so it doesn't collapse on your interview. Good luck.

Boom / Holder / Stand Recommendations?

my 4073 came in a kit from b&h with this cheapish shock mount, designed primarily for sticking in the hotshoe on top of a camera. but it has a 1/4" 20 (tripod) threaded hole in the bottom. so rather than get a c-stand and a c-stand-mounting boompole holder thingy, i've just been bringing a spare tripod. it doesn't need to be a $5000 sachtler if it's just standing there pointing a shotgun at your talent. i've just got some old cheap bogen that i've been using for these purposes, but even an $27 thing from your local mall photo shop should work, as long as it will go to the appropriate height.

i'm not sure the model number of this shockmount, but if you check b&h for the 4073 "kit" that they offer, it's the one included there.

It's the AT shockmount with the rubber bands. The rubber bands really don't work well with most mics. I have one of these I use for interior with my cartioid mics as it is much lighter than my blimp and my cartioid (Rode NT5) is too short to fit in my shotgun mount...but I did replace the rubber bands with the K-Tek shock mount holders. Holds the mic much better in the mount and provides better isolation.
