What are your suggestions for a good sturdy tripod (good price), which will be suitable for use with a jib and dolly?

Much tks

Re: Good Tripod

Much thanx,
i've seen tripods twice as much with 1/2 the load capacity.

WOW, thnx again.

any suggestions on a head for it?

Re: Good Tripod

Yes, well they do have carbon legs and such on the market but i find this set great for my use which is mainly shorts.
The head i have is a bogen 503 it is not a true fluid head i am sure you know that. I was happy with it the first couple months i had it but man now this "stiction" is killing me. To be honest i do not even recommend this head, some guys might give you feedback on true fluid heads such as Miller Sachtler and more. Do yourself a favor if your money allows and get a true fluid head.
good luck

Oh also get a leveling head (60 bucks or so from bh) 3225 i think is the model number. This will save you great time!

Re: Good Tripod

Hi,
I use the Sachtler DV2 tripod/head and am very happy with it. I only use it when the camera is loaded with full acessories like mattebox and 15 rods raiser plate, because it needs a bit more weight on to perform at its best. I got it on promotion for 1/2 price.
Cheers,
pedro

Re: Good Tripod

Well this stiction is the effect of the head upon the tilt or pan. I drag my head all the way, as tight of a fluid drag as i can. When letting the head sit for around 2 minutes the tilt starts off with a sticky-like bump, i dislike it.

Re: Good Tripod

so what's a good head for the dvx100a alone and with the weight of the other accessories and crane/jib?

any suggestions?

Re: Good Tripod

Most jibs don't mount on the tripod head, at least the ones I'm familiar with... with the EZ/FX and the CamCrane you remove the head from the tripod, mount the jib on the tripod, and then put the head on the end of the jib arm. So, theoretically, you can remove the jib from your weight calculations.

People seem to like the Manfrotto 503...

Re: Good Tripod

I've got the 503 with the 525MVB sticks and I love it. I've noticed an ever-so-slight stiction issue with the tilt (never the pan), but only occasionally. Since I never (or at least extremely rarely) do any live events, this isn't an issue for me. By the time I get around to actually rolling tape, I've rehearsed the move enough that there is not stiction problem.

Re: Good Tripod

i'ld have to recommend the vinten vision 3 head, with the right spring in it it balances amazingly well dvx and other light cameras. when properly balanced, set to the loosest tilt setting i can point the camera to the ground midway (45 degree angle) and let go and it will stay there. i can tilt it to the back and let go and it will stay balanced there. the sachtler dv heads spring back to center/level. the head goes for 1000, but i got one in great condition of ebay for 650. plus it has replacable springs to handle camera weights from 4 to 22 lbs. might be a bit much but you wont have to buy another one for a long time, you'll upgrade you camera more often than your tripod and head, so it's worth the investment. spend on the head first and buy inexpensive legs than when the time comes upgrade the legs.
