Ok so next week I will have any opportunity to be in NYC for about 3 days. Could you guys suggest any good stuff to shoot for a newbe. I just got my dvx100b (about 1 month ago) would love to get some ideas to shoot like popluar buildigs etc.. I will be around 485 madison ave. Anything good around that area?

Also from a security point of view , is it ok to carry around a dvx100b and shoot without permission? not sure what is the protpcol after 9/11 in terms of shooting things like subway etc? I was thinking about shooting somthing inside a subway like throngs of people getthing in/out etc.

The general rule of thumb in NYC is if you use a tripod, you need a permit. Hand carrying shouldn't be a problem in most areas of the city.

Shooting in the subway is still up in the air. The city had a ban :banned: on photography and video in subways and other critical locations, but then a civil liberties organization challenged the ban under freedom of speech etc. (don't remember the exact details), so the whole issue is in limbo right now. You probably won't be stopped if you try and video/photograph inside a subway but don't be surprised if you are, just cooperate with the law enforcement. It's very common nowadays to see police tables setup in the larger entrances for searches.

Many times it just depends when/where you are. Common sense and a little luck are your best guides. Last year when the ban was un-challenged, my crew and I were asked not to video inside Penn Station. Since we needed some shots of a train station, we headed over to Grand Central Station and lo and behold, the police gave us the go ahead no problem whatsoever.

Good places to video -
- Library on 42nd and 5th, that's the famous one with the lions.
- 59th and 5th, lots of tourist landmarks
- Union Square, there's always something going on there.
- Times Square
- West Side Highway path - there's a path that runs along the west side of the island, great views of the water and Jersey side
- Ground Zero
- Battery park
- China Town/Little Italy
- South Street Seaport - ships, bridges, towers etc

To add on to what Muchael has said,

If you can walk the Brooklyn Bridge, you will get an awesome view of the city's lower east side as well as South Street Seaport.

Also try taking the FREE Staten Islan Ferry, on its way to Staten Island, you will get a clear view of the Statue of Lirberty and on its way back to Manhattan, you will get an astoshing view of Manhattan, priceless. It may take about 1hour to go back and forth.

Also, if you take the 1 train to 145th Street, walk West towards RiverBank State Park, you will see a beautiful view of the George Washington Bridge and NJ, you can also walk towards the water to get some down and dirty shots of the Hudson River.

Best wishes with you visit.

Check out Ground Zero for sure. I don't think many people quite know what's going on there. And what's going to be there in the future. Though I think they have completed one of the seven new World Trade Center towers.

9/11 Never Forget.
