I am a videographer and photographer so i dont know about cheaper cameras and its hard to judge them when you have gear in the thousands. I want to get a couple a camera for a wedding gift, I am the best man so am willing to spend 300-500 or so. I need something good for photos (the wife actually does wedding events so needs to take good pictures of flower arrangements) and the guy has always been interested in my stuff. I need something easy to use but with good quality. I want it to have video but doesnt have to be the best at video. also something easy to navigate since they dont have much experience yet. I was thinking the sony a5000? No idea what else would be decent under 500 dollars or hopefully something similar closer to 300?

suggestions?

I would aim for something that is almost pocketable because you can carry it everywhere you go. Bigger cameras get left at home or in a camera bag most of the time.

I own a Panasonic LX7 compact camera that I always have with me. It's compact and has a fast zoom lens that is also pretty wide. ( equiv to 24-90mm lens on a FF camera )

I agree with Rob Norton. RX100 is a great camera. I would even say a RX100 Mark I is a good idea, and you could get that new. It's by far the most pocketable RX100 out there and if I wasn't getting the Mark IV I'd get the Mark I just based on size. As you mentioned the A5000 is stellar, also a great choice. Probably the best bang for the buck quality wise and if they add the 55-210 lens later they have a fantastic system.

Ricoh GR is just a bit beyond budget, I've heard amazing things about that camera as well. Less flexible with the fixed lens though.
