good omni mic for tapeless oncamera use?

Hi All!
I'm quite ignorant when it comes to sound so this may seem so..
I'll be using the new hvx200 tapeless camera soon and I'm getting the standard Panasonic short shotgun mic accessory but was thinking I might also get another omni directional mic that will also use the camera power for recording little music sessions that I will encounter on my upcoming travels in Carribbean and South America.... typically mix of non-mic'd vocals, acoustic guitar, double bass, bongos, spoons.... you know, little gigs with no technical set ups but beautiful sound.
My concern is that the Panasonic mic accessory for the hvx will not pick up the group as a whole that well, as I'll be panning around and moving around for shots among the musicians. Thought an omnidirectional one would suit this, if I can get a small one that fits in the same mic holder on the camera. I don't want to be tied to a free standing mic with cables tying up the musicians as I move around.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

it would sound like **** anyway , buy m audio microtrack and par of cardioid mics , put in the center and shoot what you want during the session , on camera mic is a total waist for what you intend to do

Yea, what "Exile" said.

Even though an omni wouldn't be as directional, as you moved around it would be closer to some things than others, and things would be getting louder and softer on tape, and sound nothing like what you're hearing live. You'd also be likely to pick up camera noise, any noise you're making, and things behind the cam that would be distracting.

thanks that makes sense.
Then what about one of the omni boundary mics that I could put on the floor or a table in the middle of the group and use a transmitter / receiver on camera?
- the camera has two xlr inputs...and supplies phantom power
or do you think a studio omni or stereo omni mic on a stand in the middle is better?

I just found some info on this one: AT4050/CM5 studio mic $599.00
The ultimate multi-pattern studio condenser. Cardioid, omni, For music, narration. Includes AT8441 shockmount.
Looks pretty cool, I wouldn't mind that in some of my shots... uses 48V phantom too so camera will power it. Maybe just work with the cabling problem and learn not to trip up or wrap around musicians... or maybe can get a wireless system for this?

the wireless option-
why?
if you will do it with g-2 or similar you will loose the benefit of good mic , if you will do it with good system , that around 3700 before cabling and phantom power supply ( zaxcom stereo).
why not to use benefit of good mics with ext recording?
the tascam and 2 octavas and shock mounts with 4gb card is around 1700$
for cheaper solution , you can go with microtrack (400-450 less)
or marantz 660 for 16 bit recording
that would let you ability to record interaction between musicians with on camera shot gun mic .
not to mention you will not have to cut music if you run hd on the camera ( the p-2 sucks for recording time)
