good Newbie Composite software

Whats a good software to learn Key and compositing on? I've done some simple Compositing in AE, but Im in the process of building a Green Screen, its actually drying right now wel the first coat is. Whats a good start?

AE is probably the best and most cost effective route. I've heard combustion is very intuitive. Surprisingly enough I haven't used it. NUKE is an amazing compositor. It is node based though - just like shake was.

You could pick up shake for a very decent amount, but it is hardly used professionally anymore ever since Apple decided to stop working with it.

Really shake has dropped off the market like that? I knew that Apple bought it. But I didnt know that it had become a now industry tool. Who makes Nuke?

I agree with Mattykins. AE is great to start on but most of the vfx houses use node based compositors and most of those are quite expensive.

From what I heard mattykins is right shake hasn't been updated in quite some time and it seems most professionals think it is dead.

My friend is going to let me borrow his Eyeon Fusion to practice/learn on so I'm excited about that. I need to learn the node base work flow.

what editing software are you using? Most NLEs these days have some sort of compositing ability, certainly enough to learn with, e.g. my Vegas sotware does a pretty good job.

Im useing FCP not the newest version, Im not on my mac and Id like to say studio v. 6.
I've never actually tried it in FCP, I know you you can Key and so Im sure you can Composite. Clang this is what I want to do is start to learn the basics. And I do have the newest version of AE. Im lucky enough to have a friend that had multiple liscense, But to tell you the truth all I've been using it for is doing motion graphics for some video stuff I do for some clients i have in town. ANd I checked out shake on the apple site and i remember about a year or two when that program cost in the thousands and now its 500, And combustion use to be like 800, and now its 4 grand. You can see where the industry changed.

if you're just wanting to learn the concepts, I'm pretty sure FCP will be fine (although I don't actually use it myself). Then if you love it, you might consider shelling out extra cash for fancier software - but in my experience, being able to composite from within your NLE is a lot more convenient than importing and exporting to and from some external application.

Nuke is made by the Foundry. It is by far the industry leader. Allowing 3D compositing. Very powerful program. Very expensive as well.

Clang-That is what im looking to do, My Green screen is drying outside as we are talking. I streched a painters drop canvas I bought from Sherman Williams and painted it green from a color code a got from another person on a forum looks great. But I am very comfortable in FCP, I will have to look for some Tuts online for compositing. But I also would like some external software, I guess i could learn it in AE, but there are so many fun programs to try and learn. Im hoping to be enrolled at the Douglas Art school in a year or so for Fx and taking the Tom Savini Program for Special Effects and I'd like to get a good grasp on compositing and so on being i begin working with latex and makeup.
