Good Movies

:kali:I have been having some problems lately with movies. I just haven't been able to find any movies that are innovative and fun. There doesn't seem to be very many independent features coming out and I've been stuck with hollywood garbage. Anyone noticing or having this problem too?

Things I've watched lately:

New York, I love you (C-)
Gamer (D-. I like Crank more)
Precious ( C- I liked I know why the caged bird sings more)
An Education ( C-) (The actress was great but the story halted and never really went anywhere new with that kind of subject.)
Avatar ( D-) ( I didn't care for this movie because the story was incredibly boring but it was a great achievement in graphics. I've seen it twice and will not be seeing it again.)
Youth In Revolt (C-) (Some funny parts but overall the story was alright)

See my problem! I haven't really liked anything lately. My brain just remembers all these other plots from other movies and compares them too much. I need Inception or Shutter Island to come out!!

Is there a lack of independent features lately though? I just haven't seen any good low budget movies.

Netflix is pretty amazing. A ton of Criterion Collection movies are on there now and the indies that do come out they get them right away.

You give Hurt Locker a B+?

Wow, you're a tough audience...

As good as it was, both my GF and I found ourselves falling out of it towards the middle. Not entirely sure why...

BUT, the scene in the desert with the rifles at like half a mile, was absolutely spellbinding. Amazing amazing scene.

I found myself in the same situation. I couldn't watch some of the recent films out. Aside from Hurt Locker, I had trouble finding films that I found engaging and innovative.

So, I just went back and started watching all the classic movies.

Casablanca
Citizen Kane
Seven Samurai
Raging Bull
etc.

It was surprisingly refreshing. Sort of a break from a lot of "crap" that comes out these days.

Film you should check out:

Pusher
Pusher 2
Pusher 3
Bleeder
Ex Drummer
Visitor Q
Martyrs
Sheitan
Falling Down
Bad Lieutenant (the original, Harvey Keital)
Irreversible

I have lots more but these should do you for now. Some are international movies.

Moon is really good stuff. It's derivative six ways from Sunday in some ways but it really doesn't matter: still a good story and a good performance by Sam Rockwell.

Argh, you didn't just ruin the movie for me did you?

This my be an esoteric observation, but does anyone else feel that a lot of the new, popular, independent, character driven dramas are actually TOO SHORT? I have found myself coming out of a lot of movies just feeling short changed, and, as a filmmaker, I just get this gut feeling that, "Damn, I wish I could have seen the 3rd cut. I feel that these filmmakers have set up compelling characters, in a compelling situation, and then cut everything down to just the plot points and in the end, it just does not pay off.

My big example of this is the movie "The Wrestler". Now, I liked the film, but I just feel that it did not have any, oh, I don't know... let's say... breathing room. What I found disappointing is the relationship with the stripper girlfriend and the daughter. With the daughter, we went from, "What the f*ck do you want", to , "I'm a broke down piece of meat", to "Get the f*ck out of my life". I mean, for pete sake, could there not have been a little time with the daughter just doing some catch up, getting to know each other a little, before it was shot all to hell?

The same with the stripper girlfriend. Can anyone tell me, from watching this flick, when she developed the feelings for the guy we are supposed to believe she felt at the end? I can't. Again, for pete's sake, what is so wrong with taking a little time with these people and watching them live, watching then develop, and watching them fall in love? When I left that movie, I could not help but think that there was a 3 hour cut, that I would love to see. I loved the story, I was engaged in the characters; why did I have to be subjected to an action adventure edit of their lives?

I got the same feeling recently when I saw "Crazy Heart". The characters are compelling, the actors are outstanding, why can't we take a deep breath and watch their lives without every scene being a plot point?

Like I said, maybe this is an esoteric observation, but I find it in more and more modern dramas.

No sh*t! How are things going with the academy after last nights HL meeting?

Hope they ban the douche bag, did you get the anti letter about (Hitler) Avatar in response? Funny stuff :)

Hurt Locker is burning to the ground right now...
