Good mic for a host to hold while interviewing

I'm going to be filming a kind of run and gun music festival in a few weeks and need my host to hold a mic, so he can run about and interview bands and fans etc

I was thinking a Shure SM58,

Looking at not spending that much, i know the 58 have a good sound from experience,

Any other suggestions.

I went to my local music store, and for $39 got 3 Samsun hand mics. Not great, but not bad either. And if they should get dropped or thrown, no big loss.

THe SM58 is an industry standard for vocal performance. It is relatively directional, so may not be best for all interviews.

The recommended industry standard mic for interviews that is in the same price range is the Electo Voice 635a. The EV635a is omni and picks up evenly.

You will really notice the difference the EV635a makes.

EV RE50b Hands down... do a search

Mikes got it right, RE-50 is the only logical choice. Not expensive, you can use it as a hammer to hammer in the nails on your room addition and it is very isolated from handling noise, something that most HH dynamics are NOT.

heil 30 bit ashit from most of the dynamic mics, not to mention it comes almost any color you like ,
for better sound you can invest in good condencer withpop filter .

The RE-50 is a better mic; but it also a little more expensive than the 635a.

I recommended the 635a because it is in the $100 or less price category along with the SM58.

You will not be disappointed with either of the EV mics.

I agree with Indywannabe and the others: RE-50 or the 635a(b). In my mind, the RE-50 slightly edges out the 635 for traditional ENG-style work, but I never go anywhere without a 635 in my kit. In addition to far lower handling noise, both mics are very wind-resistant.

One major advantage of the RE-50 that hasn't been touched up on is the optics of it. RE-50's are so ubiquitous in local and national newscasts that they might as well be invisible to viewers. The longer, slimmer body and all-black finish make it both comfortable and inobtrusive. The SM-58, on the other hand, sticks out like a sore thumb with its short, wide body and silver mesh screen.

You should look at the Sennheiser MD46.
Low wind and handling noise.

And the MD 42.

The MD 42 and 46 are specially designed for hand-held interview work.

The 42 is Omni and the 46 is Cardioid - otherwise the same.

They also work well with a plug-on radio transmitter.
