Good Mac For FCP

Hi. I'm shopping for a Mac just for running FCP. A few questions:

1. Anyone running on a single 1.8 Ghz?
2. What's a nice amount of memory, and how much is overkill?
3. Apple sells two different graphics cards. Any advantages in getting the more expensive one?
4. Does the dual 1.8 Ghz version justify the extra money?
5. Any insider stuff I should know before I buy?
6. I'm just curious - I saw Soundtrack Pro in an Apple keynote thing. Is Soundtrack Pro basically just like Vegas (if so, great!)?

Thanks in advance.

1 I have a friend that is with no problems.
2 For FCP at least a gig, 2 would be nice.
3 For FCP only, no.
4 Depends if you don't mind the extra time rendering, compressing, ect.
5 Yes,know what you want now and give your self room to grow so you don't have to upgrade in a year.
6 I don't think so,STP is strickly audio(and it looks fuc#ing sweet!!) and isn't vegas a NLE.

hope that helps.

Note that graphic cards will continue to play more of a role in real time render. With Tiger and Motion this is the case is supposed to be with FCP 5. There are different speed tests of graphic cards for several apps at http://www.barefeats.com/
Whether it's worth the extra $ is up to you. If you're not on a time critical project it won't matter at all. You could also move up if you start gettign a lot of heavy paid projects.

Thanks, dudes and/or dudettes.

kito, oops, yes, Vegas in an NLE, but I don't used it for video. Its base design comes from its roots in audio. And it is great for that.

scott, I found some excellent benchmarks on that site. Very, very informative. Thanks!

Apple usually has a 9-12 month replacement scheme going right now, and they were last updated in July, so soon there will be an updated model. By the WWDC conference in june, there is a 99% chance that new G5s will be here.
