Ok, here i go...
lookin for good lights, which have great output, but yet not power hungry. will be using them for everything (lol) interior and exterior needs. and also prefer that they not get hot, b/c i'd want to use gels. i'll be also defusing them too....so if there's any suggestions on that/ packages too, i'd be more than appreciative. It would be cool if i could adjust the light/dim also.

Much tks.

So, u all, who are more experienced than me <most of u>, what are your suggestions?

Much thanx.

I've been looking at other posts.

and i've been wondering about tota, kino, halogen, britek dayphoto, etc.

tell me what u use and your suggestions....remember, cost is very important to me.

ps....i was once interested in some lights i saw on ebay with soft boxes which 3k watt lights...but reading from posts in other threads...i realize that i'd be setting my self up for a situation of needing to spend even more money to be able to power the suckers.

oh well....thanx in advance to whomever provide some info.

Damn, I love this forum....lol

Re: Good lighting, low budget

Hey ozone, I work in a rental shop that provides lighting and grip equipment. My suggestion to you is read a couple of articles in just about any American Cinematographer, this will give you an idea about lighting in general. Also unfortunately for you even small professional lights are exspensive, for example an ARRI 150watt pepper is going to be around $300.00 US and that doesn't include a bulb, or stand. What you might consider are the halogen work lights that are found at the big box stores, like HOME DEPOT, they are cheap and with a little knowledge of lighting techniques can work well. You can also build or buy small dimmer units for each light, throw on some gels or diffusion and your set. Hope this helps.

The only lights with great output and not power hungry are HMI's.

I will be using them for everything (lol) interior and exterior needs.
The only lights usually suitable for using for everything are tungsten lights.

and also prefer that they not get hot, b/c i'd want to use gels.
The only lights that don't get hot are fluorescents. Or maybe the new LED lights.

So, wow -- you've certainly undertaken a herculean task. There is no one single light system that does all that you want. I understand what you want, but it just doesn't exist... that's why my kit has Fluo's, Tungsten, and HMI's... because they all have uses and they all do things that the others can't.

It would be cool if i could adjust the light/dim also.
Tungsten units can be dimmed, and a few fluorescents can (like the Kino Flo Diva 400's).

You don't mention what your budget is, only that it's low. For versatility I'd say your main lights should be Britek tungstens. Get a couple of 650's with softboxes and a couple of 250's (or 200's) for a reasonably well-rounded kit. Then you may want to augment the kit with some of Jarred's homemade fluorescents, I think he said the total cost on those was under $100, wasn't it?

Tungsten lights get very hot, but you can gel them as long as you use real cine gels and keep them a decent distance away from the light head (Briteks include gel clips on the barn doors for that purpose).

Britek DayPhoto's are discontinued, so they really aren't much of an option, especially for your budget since each light+stand+softbox kit is about $1000.

Re: Good lighting, low budget

Those are Briteks, but they're the older style. Go to Rostronics for excellent service, newer-style lights, and a 5% dvxuser discount.

Re: Good lighting, low budget

Yes - how do we get the discount, and: anyone have experience with them shipping to Canada?

Re: Good lighting, low budget

When you order from rostronics, there's a box for discount codes. Just put "DVXUSER" in that box, and they'll take 5% off!

I know that Jarred lives in the Vancouver area and he bought some without any complaints about delivery.
