Any thoughts on a good LAPTOP video card for Premiere? I´m thinking of replacing mine.
Current system: LG A520, Core i7-230QM CPU @ 2.00GHZ, 6GB RAM, 64bit, GeForce GT540M
This is the best Quadro card for laptops. The benchmark here is lower than the GTX but that is deceptive because this card is tuned for CAD, not games. Couldn't find any prices but I wouldn't be surprised if a whole new laptop featuring this card was cheaper to buy than just the card itself.
When I was looking at getting an editing laptop recently I was looking at one with a GTX670M or a Quadro 2000M/3000M for bang for buck. In the end I went for a desktop. Cost less and even though I don't have a GPU yet the i7 ivy bridge processor alone (using integrated graphics) is rendering a 1 minute clip at 1080p in 1 minute 18 seconds.
I too built a desktop instead of a laptop. I bought a low end i3 laptop for day to day use and for some editing, although I think I might go for an i7 laptop now around the $750 price point.
My rule of thumb is that a laptop costs twice as much as a desktop, and has about 1/2 the useful life (for higher end work.)
I am just upgrading my 3 year old Dell i7 920 to 27GB of RAM, a 120 GB SSD scratch drive, 2x 2TB Seagate drives in RAID 0, and a GTX 560. My total investment including original purchase is just over $1,000.
Sorry, I know that is not your question. I can't speak specifically to the laptop cards.
This site has comparisons on a lot of video cards. I don't know how the laptop cards compare, but you could look at RAM, CUDA cores, and relative performance gains to find the sweet spot for you. (As usual, the cost goes up for that last bit of incremental performance.)
I also love to mine data on this site. I am still waiting for the CS6 database with more complex tests, but tehy have 900+ computers benchmarked, along with the commponent lists and configuration:
