good hand mic

I am looking for a good hand mic that would work well about 1 foot below the mouth for an interview. I need a mic that would isolate background noise but I could frame out of a head and shoulder shot. The mic would be held by an interviewer not a soundman, and I don't need the audio of the inteviewer. Any suggestions of a mic under $500.00?

EV RE-50 is a great mic. I like the Sennheiser MD 46. Cardiod pattern,
It's a long bodied mic, low handling noise.

I second the EV RE-50; great mic for handheld interviews. The Sennheiser MD 46 is also an excellent choice.

The Electrovoice 635 is also worth a look. It lacks the heft and length of the other two, although that can be remedied by painting an XLR barrel matte black and snapping it onto the end. The omni pickup means an increase in background noise, but it also means that the placement is a bit more forgiving (as long as you're in close). In general use, I find it to be a bit more versatile than the other two mics, which are more specialized for video journalism. Radio journalists buy 635's by the case, so they're easy to find used (although they're rather reasonably priced even when new).

I third the EV-RE50, but I'd pay the little extra for the NDB... higher sensitivity neodymium model... considering you put a top price of $500... jeez... you should be thrilled with the suggestions here :)

Another mic I like is the Beyerdynamic stick mic... m58 I believe? I had one of these, but if I bought another one today I'd get the EV instead... just because it's the... THE... industry standard for interview mics. I think the Beyer might be a better actual mic... but I always thought it looked kind of goofy on-cam... why not use what you already see on every major network as it is?

there are many good choices out there
but this is still the one I use. My newest one is only a couple months old.

Great suggestions. Do these mics work well from 1 foot away compared to eating the mic like some reporters do? I want to keep the mic out of the shot.

The Beyerdynamic M59 is listed as a hypercardiod mic. Would this mic perfrom better than an omni if the mic is one foot from the subjects mouth, specifically in terms of keeping background noise down?

I'd go with MD 46 you can use it 1-2' from the subject it just looses some base response is all. Great Mic though you can interview someone with a tractor driving by and you just don't pick it up. Pretty awesome.

This is exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks.

How does the EV RE50 N/D-B (omni) compare to the Sennheiser MD431-II (supercardioid) when use as a interview mic?

Chalk and cheese - the MD 431 was designed as a stage vocal mic.

The Sennheiser interview mics are:
MD 21 (omni)
MD 42 (omni)
MD 46 (cardioid)

The MD 421 (cardioid) is also excellent for interviewing (and what I used to use in my radio days).
