I'm the worst when it comes to mics.

I love the countrymans for lavs, but for shottys there's just such a breadth of choices.

I've got the opprotunity to pick up a pair (ugh!) of AKG c568s for 400 bucks. Individually they're 650 dollar mics. Should I just go for this and be done with it? Where do these mics stack up against say, an NTG 3, Oktava, etc?

There're individual Oktavas available for around 250.

Thanks guys!!

I've never seen that model mentioned for boom mic use. Doesn't mean it won't work, but certain models are favorites here and with good reason- they are tried and true.
Octava is unbeatable in its price range for indoors, with handling noise it's only real drawback. 516, NT-3 and 4073 for outdoor use come up most often (unless over $1000, Schoeps being the favorite then).

Shotgun: Rode NTG-3 Same as a MKH416, only half the price. 700.00 Totally worth it.
Hyper: Audio Technica AT4053 is great bang for the price - 500.00

NT3 is a good indoor cardioid for how cheap it is, but it's pretty brittle. I have a comparison trhread here of these mics.
