Good and Bad Double-Features

Drew Ott

Wish I were banned.
Respond with an example of a good double feature and a bad double feature.

Good: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly followed by Cinema Paradiso, theatrical version. (Ennio Morricone is the link, though a link is by no means necessary).

Bad: Finding Nemo followed by Schindler's List.

I'm sure we can think of some better (and worse) ones.

Good: Adventureland and Zombieland.
Bad: Raiders of the Lost Ark...followed by Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

In 1982, I went to drive-in for what no one knew at the time was a remarkable double-feature:

Raiders of the Lost Ark followed by Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

The drive-in even broadcast the soundtracks in FM stereo.

1981-82 Was a phenomenal time to be a kid and a sci fi geek. There was Raiders, Clash of the Titans, Dragonslayer, Escape From New York, An American Werewolf in London, Conan The Barbarian, The Road Warrior, Star Trek II, E.T., Poltergeist, Blade Runner, The Thing, Tron, and also...Megaforce. The thing to remember too, is that box office hits ran in theaters for like, a year, which is why you could have a Raiders and Star Trek II double feature.

Can I do a marathon example? Follow along with me for a moment.

A marathon of Toho's Godzilla films from 1957 through 1964...

with a follow up 2004 from Toho...

and then 'someone' from you-know-where decides "Hey, we can do better than that. We know what the people really want."

Ahem!

A decent enough movie but perhaps a different title could have saved the resulting backlash from Godzilla fans.

After which we get back to normal again with another Toho release...

Thank you Toho.

I'm not sure if I really like or dislike beating up on Hollywood but they really got it wrong that time.

You don't have to tell me. I think '82 was the best year for movies, not just sci-fi movies, ever. If you throw '81 in with it, I don't know how it could be questionable.

Those are certainly two great years in cinema. I think I'd have to go with 1981, though.

Don't blame 'Hollywood.'

Blame Dean and Roland.

One of the first screenwriting blogs I ever read was by the guys who wrote the 1998 version of Godzilla... and they talked on and on about how much the studio ruined their vision for Godzilla.

I don't know if that blog was ever popular though, so I don't know if you're serious.

Jeezus!

I remember seeing Conan the Barbarian followed by a Friday the 13th movie at the Harriburg drive in.

For the uninitiated, behold Megaforce, the film that makes the GI Joe movie look like The Dark Knight--

As a kid I saw Ghostbusters followed by Animal House at a drive in. thats the only double feature i ever recall seeing.

Belushi was originally going to play Venkman in Ghostbusters, you know. That would have been interesting.

Batutta,
Man, I was discussing Megaforce not even two days ago in a drunken argument. Thanks for the link, I just won a bet...

Yeah, I was watching a Bill Murrey Doc the day. I like how he fired all his agents and got a 1-800 #.
