Good Affordable Tripod?

Sorry if This has been posted before (im sure it has) but I searched for "tripod' and didnt really get any clear answers.

Im getting a dvx in the next week or so and looking for some accesories to get for it, one being a tripod.

I've heard of...Bogen tripods being good but no specifics, what exactly makes a tripod good?

For instance, I see 40 dollar tripods made of plastic at best buy ( i used to own one, didnt seem TOO bad), then comparable to 1000's of dollars. I dont have much experience with them as I just pop the camera on it for static shots.

I hear a good entry one will be in the 200-300 range?

Also, I really love the 360 crane from dvmoves.com, however, with the dvx purchase I dont think i can fork over 1000usd for it, anyone have any plans to make one like that (with the extra handle to control it) or another company that makes them like that for cheaper?

Go to around page seven of this section and you will see a discussion called "tripods" which has quite a few hinters and opinions. I just ordered a Manfrotto 3011BN with G2380 head from evsonline for $277 (Rush told me it was a good one for travelling with), so I will let you know what I think of that when I get it.

:) I've got a $40 or so tripod in aluminum. Seems stable enough...until you actually use it.

Just pushing the Rec button causes the thing to vibrate long enough to ruin the first 5 seconds or so of the shot. And don't breathe heavily around it.

(I'm planning on forkeing over about $800 for a Bogen/Bogen sooner or later.)

;D I remember those days.... I even got some sand in mine, so every time I panned, I would feel and hear this "GrrrrbllllllGrrrrr" in the head.

Re: Good Affordable Tripod?

The real difference is between a 'still' camera head and a 'video' head. A still camera has no need for smooth pans and tilts. The action in a still camera friction head is OK, but not great for video. If you are just learning, maybe this is tolerable. When you get experienced, you will want a fluid head, it is designed to give smooth pans and tilts.

Re: Good Affordable Tripod?

wow, I completely missed that tripod thread on page 8, its was a little helpful.

Im not a big fan of pans so im not sure how huge of a concern a tripod is, but this...Bogen 503 or 501 seems to be a favourite. EVS seems to have like 3-4 of each, so im confused on this.

Re: Good Affordable Tripod?

You'll get smoother action from the 503. It is a much better head than the 501 if you can afford the difference.
