Good AE beginner books?

I have an AE book that I found on Amazon.com a couple years back which have some pretty good tutorials, but to tell you the truth I've learned so much more just by watching video tutorials and reading posts in here....I'd say you are way better off learning firsthand, especially when you can watch how they do each step, whereas a book may jump a few steps leaving you lost on what to do next...I had that problem when I was reading some of the books tutorials....Plus, the video tutorials are free....Can't get much sweeter than that....Check out creative cow or one of the many other AE how to sites....

Cheers

After Effects

After Effects

You have to get the Chris and Trish Meyer books, they will give you a great start.
After Effects in Production and
Creating Motion Graphics. Amazon has them new and used. These will give you the
basics and lead you into more advanced projects. They give you a understanding of how
and why graphics work on SD video and on computer screens. They cover all the basics
of why photoshop and illustrator files act the way they do in different formats.
They give you project files to start with and walk you throug the process.
The best place to start imho.
Good Luck!

Best AE books out there IMHO. I got up to speed very quickly with "Creating Motion Graphics". I went through a bunch of the web tutorials as well but the problem with a lot of the tutes was they were basically a paint by number approach. Step one do this and step two, now do this, etc. No real background or fundamental explaination of why.

The best AE training resource is the Total Training series.

I think the route you decide to take depends on your starting point. If you already have some experience with keyframing from using effects in a NLE then you might get away with self training given some time. If you need to get up to speed quickly then Total Training or a book is a better choice.

Also, coming very soon from the Myers' is "AE Apprentice". I've seen a copy and it's perfect for beginners. I think you can pre-order it on Amazon right now.
