Gonna try multicam, any tips or "gotchas"?

Since I'm always looking to kick up the quality and impressiveness of my podcasts and promo DVDs, etc., I decided to try some multicam stuff. I do talking head and interviews mostly, and having a 2nd cam to switch to another angle now and then will look very professional, important since I'm sending out promo stuff to get people to buy my products, and the more "pro" it looks the more effective it will be. I'll be using my HVX as my main cam and sync up the timecode with my DVX, which I haven't gotten around to selling since the upgrade (and maybe that's a good thing if this works out as planned).

If anyone has done multicam in FCP and has any warnings or "gotchas" before I begin, I'd greatly appreciate hearing about them. Thanks!

Multiclip requires all angles to be the same format so HVX with DVX is not going to work unless both are shooting to DV.

It'll be DVCPRO50 on the HVX and DV on the DVX ... my understanding is that both will work in the "DV50" easy set up I use with DVCPRO50, please let me know if that'll work.

If not I'll go back to selling the DVX.

The media must match identically for Multicam to function. That's not to say you can't convert all of the DV on the DVX100 to DVCPRO50 after you capture it but it won't work without a move like that.

Nevercoldcall you already mentioned syncing timecode. For me thats (apart from what Noah is telling you) the most important. Ive done a lot of multicam and whilst I can sync cameras with different timecode its a pain in the butt and takes a whole extra step that wastes a lot of time.

Almost forgot: If you can (Im not sure how you usually capture audio so I wont presume), just capture your audio through one of the cams (rather than external device is what I am getting at). Makes it that little bit easier.

Yup I'll be synching timecode between the DVX and HVX. And feeding my mic into the HVX. So I should be okay there.

Thanks for the input Noah, I'll convert the DV to DVCPRO50 before attempting multicam.

Thanks!

FYI - I read the HVX book and learned that the HVX can only sync to another camera that is *not* another HVX in DV. So, looks like my two options are to shoot in DV, or to rent another HVX for the day, which is the more attractive option.

i don't even use the timecode or sync cameras...

multcam feature is so easy... you can sync them just based of the movement of the person talking since you just alinging the clips by inpoint or off the audio....just snap your fingers or flash when you get your cameras up and running
