Golf Swing Effect

If you guys watch the golf channel, I'm sure you've seen this effect. I'll try and explain it the best I can.

Basically, It's a golfer, in slow motion, swinging a club. And theres perfect trails as he swings. Theres probably 20 different clubs as he comes down to swing. They do not follow the swing of the club, but they stick to the image.

Can this be done in AE?

is it just a half/transparent image trail, or does it include more vector animation and graphics?

This is all done in AE and Photoshop. My buddy is actually the lead creative over there and I've done some freelance over there as well. They use FCP, Adobe products and Cinema 4D for all the shows. Most of the stuff is cut out from images in Photoshop then stiched and animated in After Effects. Titles are usually done in Cinema and updated live in AE.
