Golden Globes 2011

Hmm, not sure how I feel about the results of the 2011 Golden Globes. While I really admire all of the work seen in The Social Network, I felt like other films deserved the award more.

For instance, I felt that Christopher Nolan deserved Best Director. Nobody has been able to completely mind-f..k an audience like that in a good long while, and he really did an amazing job pulling it off.

I understand The Social Network taking Best Picture-Drama, though my personal vote was for Black Swan. I was pleased to see Firth, Portman, Bale and Leo win the acting categories. I was kind of hoping either Seidler or Nolan would win for Best Screenplay (Seidler for sentimental reasons relating to the story behind the script, as well as the fantastic work in the script itself), but Sorkin did a fantastic job and deserved the award as well.

Please don't post about how the Golden Globes are a sham, or how The Tourist shouldn't have been nominated for anything, etc. I'm sure there are other threads more fit for bitching. <wink>

I guess I'll be the guy carrying The Social Network flag then because I loved the movie. My favorite of last year by far, but that's me. Inception was something new but to me falls apart (the value in it, the longevity of enjoying it) far easier the second, third, or fourth time around unlike The Social Network which is just solid to the core (for me).

The night had a very weird tone to it with most jokes falling flat. Almost every time they cut to a celebrity they looked dead or constipated.

Hmm. I've seen it 4 times (3x in theaters) and I'm still not bored with it.

I'm going to rent The Social Network tomorrow and watch it again. Like I said, it was a fantastic movie (the ending was brilliant), but I'm just not sure it stands up against such masterpieces as Inception and Black Swan.

Haha, yeah. They made a really dicey move bringing Gervais in to host. Some of the jokes he was making seemed pointlessly rude.

I thought the funniest part of the night was probably Robert Downey Jr.'s presentation.

Worst part of the night was when they kept playing that horrible Glee version of Don't Stop Believing... <sigh>

January Jones is always so beautiful. It's ridiculous.

yes, weird night. They were all bagging on the foreign press in their speeches. Hope to see some differences in the Academy Awards.

Anybody else thought Paul Giamatti was wasted?

His acceptance speech was awk-ward.

Stoned, maybe. But I thought Paul Giamatti was always stoned...

No, seriously. He was just on The Daily Show last week and he acted just the same. I like him. <grin>

I'm surprised anybody at all takes the Golden Globes seriously.
It's always been known that these awards serve only to fatten the pockets of those who control the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Recent lawsuits only serve to underscore that fact.

I was pleased that The Social Network won... but I have not seen The King's Speech or Black Swan.

I am with Kyle on Inception though... the film has no heart... on a second and third viewing the mind frak is over and there isn't anything to hold on to.... IMO

It's interesting, because I've heard several other people say the same thing. I dunno, I still love the movie. <grin>

I think part of it might have to do with my willingness to love it, though - each time I see it, I want to enjoy it, and I do.

What did everyone think of Ricky Gervais? I thought he was great...although there were no jokes about the awful DATE NIGHT because his pals were in it ;)

I agree that INCEPTION had no heart, TSN was great, as was KING'S SPEECH and I really liked 127 HOURS, though it din't get nom for Picture.

I feel a bit uneasy about Sorkin winning screenplay. If anyone's read the book THE ACCIDENTAL BILLIONAIRES, virtually the whole movie, and dialogue, is in there, minus the opening scene. I hate how the GGs merge all screenplays together; original screenplays take a hell of a lot more work than adapted ones.

That's not necessarily true. If you find a great work that nobody's ever even heard of, then yeah, maybe. Anything that anyone's read, though, and you'll find yourself having to live up to the source material. And what you find in the source material may not always work on screen.

I know several books that I'd love to adapt, but I won't even think of it until I can fully commit to it, because you have to really work on it.

That said, I do prefer the AMPAS system of separating adapted works from original works.

Agree completely, but ACCIDENTAL BILLIONAIRES wasn't hugely known, or respected in the way that ENGLISH PATIENT or LOTR was, for example. You should check out the book - it's really well written, like a novel, and it contains lots of great lines that didn't make it into the film. I'm happy Sorkin mentioned Ben Mezrich in his speech - he hadn't before that I recall.
