gold

What gells were used in godfather to get the gold light thats in almost every shot. It seems to be like a straw gell or something similer. Also how was it applied so it didnt look too deliberate?

You are on the right track by guessing straw gel. That gives a very good golden hue, without overpowering. I would not be surprised if it were straw. If you are striving for that effect, get a gel book (they are free) and look at other shades close to straw. Do some tests and pick the right one(s) for the job.

The second part of your question is what confuses me. Please further explain.

Second part of my question was asking how they positioned the lights so it didnt over power but was just suddle enough to give the effect.

Please upload a photo, and I'll try to help.

What you said, probably depended on the shot, and also I'm not really sure how they used it or what you want.

Was it a backlight? Rim light? Fill? Key?

Im mainly talking about the opening shot with the dolly in long take. I know there was some kind of light over head to get rid of marlen brandos eyes. but then theres this golden tint to the whole picture but I dont think it was CC because of the time period and also the suite is still a flat black.

This what you are referring to?

If this is it, I think it would be less strong then straw. Perhaps 1/2 or 1/4 straw.

What does the suite's 'blackness' have to do with the color of light? Black would absorb the light anyhow. Have you thought of perhaps using a filter? Maybe a light tinted front filter would get this look.

EDIT: The whites still look white, which tell me that they might have slightly tinted the shirts a light blue to balance out with the filter, or the use of gel/filter is very very slight.
