Going wireless on a Mac questions

good morning everyone,

i had a few questions about going wireless on a mac.

As for hardware, there is the airport extreme that runs about $200. I was wondering if there were other, cheaper options that will give me the same performance for the Mac.

Also I know i would need the airport extreme card

Any other hardware that is needed?

Also, for going wireless at hotspots, such as cafe's and bookstores, are there any settings I need to consider to protect myself.

I've looking at System Preferences/Sharing and have done the following:

Firewall On
Services all Off
Personal File Sharing Off
Internet Sharing Off

Are there any other things i could do to protect my computer while going wireless?

any info. would be greatly appreciated.

thnx

Any wireless G router will get you going for much less. I have the Dlink at home and it treats me well. I think it was 50 bucks.
If the wifi is free your airport should just pic up the signal. Some of them are password protected.

I'm using a Belkin with my Mac. I went through a D-Link, Linksys and Netgear first. You wouldn't think it'd be so hard to build a G-router that worked. Plus, the Belkin actually acknowledges that Mac's exist and lets you turn on Appletalk -- important if you're using DSL and have a printer connected to your router.
