Curious if any DVXusers are planning to be in Park City for Slamdance and/or Sundance? If so, I'd love to meet-up with some new or familiar faces while I'm there. While I wish I were there with a film, I think I've got an even better, or "bigger", reason to be there.
The last two years have seen a lot of talk about how the model for the distribution of independent cinema is essentially broken. And while some innovative ideas have been explored, for the most part, it's just been a lot of talk. I don't know about you but I'm done talking. I'm ready to start doing. I'm ready to take advantage of the opportunities presented by this downturn to redefine the new model that will carry us through the next ten years. I don't think we need to wait for the powers that be to tell us how it's going to be. It CAN come from the so-called "bottom".
As you may or may not know, I work as the editor of the NEW BREED blog at The Workbook Project. This year the WBP will be holding a global Filmmaker Summit at Slamdance featuring guest speakers from across the globe. The first will be Steven Soderbergh kicking off the summit's mission to invite all filmmakers in Park City and those watching online to collectively craft a new charter for filmmaking, storytelling and content distribution.
I can't say too much else about content of the day, but I truly believe this is the first step toward action. It will be broadcast live via the internet. January 23rd, 2010.
