Going to NAB this year and what else....

So I have the opportunity to travel to Vegas for NAB this year.

Having never been to Vegas (coming from Toronto) figured to make the trip into a 7 day work(vacation). What interesting and film/photo worthy things are there to do around Vegas (within a 7hr-ish drive). I'm not looking for your typical tourist things, just some "off-the-beaten-track" stuff that would make interesting film/photo ops.

Any thoughts?

Is that 7 hours roundtrip or one way... It's 4-5 hours to Los Angeles area. It's about 3-4 to Zion National Park. 4-5 hours to Grand Canyon.

There's Yucca Flat, which is the site of the US Nuclear Test Area that saw above ground testing until the 60's, then underground testing till the 80's and some 'non-detonation' testing is presently continuing... apparently there are monthly tours... no cameras, binoculars, cell phones... and you probably get weighed and radiation badged... I've not gone on such a tour as yet...

And to the north there's Area 51... No public tours... no access... no aliens... well... maybe no aliens...

For still photos my wife and I loved the Neon Graveyard http://www.neonmuseum.org/

It was cool to get some history of the signs but also got some great photos of the rusted out classic signs. We are planning to print one off for our wall. Great mix of colours and textures.

7hrs one way is fine. I looked into the Yucca Flat tours, fully booked up until July. :(

Thanks!

Since NAB is 'springish' time frame, you could probably do a driving tour of Death Valley. A short distance north of Las Vegas is "Valley of Fire" which also has some interesting 'nature' shots, etc.

The problem Las Vegas for me is perhaps 'familiarity' breeds contempt... there is of course The Strip... and Hoover Dam (probably you got a better 'tour' by watching "Transformers"(2007), even it is mostly a Hollywood set somewhere else...)... but you asked for non-tourist type activities, and there is plenty of 'desert nature' places in the surrounding area... which may be different from 'Toronto'... in some small way...
