I've looked into external harrdrives but I am unsure how to go. People on here have said the Lacie is not dependable, and I've heard you pay for the design and so forth. The cheapest way I've found is to have an external enclosure (say a Vantek) and a Westendigital 250 gB Drive that I put together and format. Presuming that is easy to do.

Also I've heard of G-Tech's G-Raid but where would I find one of those here in Canada.

Thanks.

I did exactly what you're going to do. WD 250gb/SATA/7200/HDD and a Kingwin external enclosure. USB 2.0 offers blazing transfers, and overall I'm satisfied. I'm using Windows, though, and had some issues with sleep mode.

I'd say you don't necessarily need the SATA. But from everything I read, it's a good idea to get an enclosure that has a fan in it, especially if the drive is going to be used as a working/capture drive. If you don't want one with a fan, just make sure the enclosure is made of aluminum for heat dissipation. And you may consider a Maxtor, which users report to run cooler.

Oh, and I bought my stuff from www.newegg.com

Get a G drive you wont be sorry you did and there customer service and technical support is superb.:)

Go with the G-Tech G-RAID drives, they are very fast if you put them on a firewire 800 or SATA bus.

Stay away from Lacie Porsche drives, they are cheap and crap. I used the other Lacies and they work fine, for about a year, and usually their cheap power bricks bust or fade out and cause a ton of problems. Out of the 20 or so we've had in the office, only 1 drive ever gave us problems, but we've had to replace 5 or 6 power bricks after a year of solid use. However, no complaints about their customer service as whenever we had a problem they would ship us a new drive or power brick as needed.

Or if you build your own enclosure, go with Seagate drives.

I have a bunch of Lacie drives and they are great...quiet...even dropped one once and it was okay....don't drop it though.

I have a LaCie 250 Gig Big Drive and it sucks...Crashed on me once, it is not that fast either. Go with GRAID, I will be next time around.

I always suggest getting an external enclosure and buying a HD. One of the reasons is because if something goes wrong you can troubleshoot yourself by testing swappnig out the drives.
- I'm a fan of Seagate drives
here is the enclose I have

Same set-up here. I get enclosures and Seagate Drives from MacSales.com. Solid. Troubleshooting is the keyword. Drives fail, period. Seagate is the oldest independent hard drive manufacturer in the world. They come with a 5 year warranty. Very quiet, dependable drives.

What is the difference between the g-tech 250 gig for about $220 and the 320g g-raid for around $400?
