I will be going to college in 38 days and I have been preparing a bunch. I was wondering if any of you have advice to lend me to help make college a little easier. I have been making a list of all the things I need to do before I leave, like forwarding magazine subscriptions to the dorm and figuring out what to bring. any advice?

thanks

Making college easier:

Do not miss class twice in one week

no classes before 10.

Stock Gatorade and chocolate milk for hangovers.

Dump any casual girlfriends

Contemplate Kant.

Don't room with someone you know.

Don't take up smoking.

Take a roadtrip with your new buddies for spring break.

Don't try to funnel more than 3 beers.

Memorize the general prologue to the Canterbury Tales in middle English. (makes you sound scholarly)

Live on a coed floor.

get occasional exercise.

scout the local bars for nickel wing night.

Don't unintentionally end up on youtube.

Know that youth is wasted on the young.

Call your mom once a week.

Just went through my first year.

There are people who "get" college and there are people who think they are still a senior in high school. Don't be the latter, they are all idiots.

Without sounding uhhh (well what ever this sounds like...) be free. I really found myself in my first year and have a total complete different outlook on life. Take risks.

Yeah, college can be a lot of fun and more than anything its a "finding yourself" period, like BennisHahn said. Great advice by bosindy too - I might have been bitter about breaking up with my girlfriend as we both started at the same school, but I soon realized that in college...its SO much better to be single during your first year on residence. Lots of fun, you don't get bogged down or restricted and you meet lots more people than if you had a significant other.

Also, because you "find yourself", your outlook on everything (including boyfriends/girlfriends) is different and your tastes change. Keep that in mind, as well as getting lots of exercise. You don't want to gain the Freshman 15. Beer really goes straight to your gut if you're not careful. The advice about not missing two classes a week is also really helpful - you don't want to fall into a slump, because then its just not worth the money to go anymore.

GOOD LUCK!

Most important thing - sit in the front row of all your classes, especially the ones you hate.

1) Otherwise it's too easy to zone out

2) The prof thinks you like the class, and will know who you are - always worth a few points!

Nickel wing night?? Not for a guy going to college in 2007. You're lucky to find 25 cent wing night.

My list includes:

Pretend to love sports
Type notes on a laptop if you can
But don't use AIM or facebook in class
Find a friend in each class so you enjoy going a little more.
Try to introduce yourself to your professor sometime.
If your professor put notes online, be the first to download & read em'.

Are you going to college in Minnesota? If so, which one?

Find something cool for your dorm room. Something that will be visible from the hallway. Make it unusual. For instance, in my freshman year, we had an old Dairy Queen booth under one of the lofted bunks. You wouldn't believe how many women would stop to talk to us because of that. It was a great icebreaker because nobody else had one.

Do all the homework.
Dont cut any classes. Dont party during the week. To the extent you can, stay away from the party scene. Not saying you cant relax and have fun once in a while, just that dorms can be a real bad influence here. Trust me. You'll see plenty of idiots overdoing it. (They do seem to dissappear after a while.)
Commit yourself to studying and by the time your're a senior you'll have it easy.
Above all, remember your parents. Its their money thats enabling you to have a future. 4 years will go by in a flash.
College will always be one of your greatest experiences. Its an incredible time in your life both personally and professionally. Keep everything in prespective, take full advantage of it.
Go for it!

Dude, I partied during the week all the time, and turned out just fine. (Now if you'll excuse me, I have to get back to editing cable TV spots.)

PS- I have a feeling if 19 year old Scott had studied mathemetics a little harder, 35 year old Scott would have a better grasp of After Effects.

You beat me to that one. I saw a sign for '35 cent wing night' the other day, I guess that's cheap for 2007.

LOL, I may be dating myself here but it was the early nineties not 1956, as the old saying goes, "it's not the razor it's the blades" It's not the wings, its the beer they are selling and the hope you will come back when it is not a Tuesday. The advice really is to find the bargains in town because every college kid is dirt poor.

a few more tips:
-Your laundry lasts as long as your clean underwear, stock up.
-Never do laundry within 2 weeks of Thanksgiving break.
-Don't join a frat unless you really feel it is for you.
-Take one layup elective first year that is rote memorization rather than abstract theory (Geography, meteorology)
-If you are a liberal arts major, take some economics, accounting and finance.
-Unless you want to be a math major, the above and what you already know is enough math to get you through the rest of your life.
-If you are a business major, take diverse liberal arts electives
-If you need to get your GPA up, take a class over winter break. (intensive and no distractions)
-Go to at least one game of each sporting event your school has. (nothing like college fans)
