First off, before I respond I would like to ask: What are the chances that two people post in this thread with the word Papa as a member name? uncanny.

Eric..good break down. I guess its important to give people what they want but I always agonize of the people who are cheap cheap cheap and want barebones. If they don't pay for it, they don't get it. But you wind up giving them an example of your work that definitely does not reach its full potential.

Cheezweezl...I'm with PaPa on this one...where better than the business section to post a question about "going rates?" Seems only natural to me...

Also, PaPa, I don't know where you are located but you can go to WEVA.com and find a list of videographers in your area. You can go to their sites directly to get an idea of what they charge.

Hope this helps.

it was originally posted in the dvx footage section and eventually moved here. my post was when it was in the footage section.

Those rates seem ok I guess. That's about what I charge for a music video here in L.A.

However, It seems that the rule of thumb is that everything to do with weddings costs way more so that quote may be cheap... I have never done a wedding so I don't know what the work is like exactly but I think I would charge more...

Charge whatever the market will bare.

Those rates are based on an 8 hour block. I charge 150/hr. per camera, for every hour after 8. Some weddings I've been on the clock for 14 hrs. Realistically I have found that is a much better way to get those $3-4K deals when they start with the add-ons...

Cheez, do you have any rates to post?

nothing for a wedding since i don't do them. but for music videos, i charge $500 per day shooting and $500-$1000 for the edit depending on how complex. my last one went 2 days and the edit was insane so i charged $2000.

like i said i may be totally off since i know nothing about doing weddings. i'm sure you know your market. i just get paranoid sometimes. i don't want to see this business go down like the audio business has. ever since guitar centers took over the world and it became so cheap to get into recording, there are all these kids doing it and charging super low rates. too low for the amount of talent and skill required to do the job. over the last 5 years i watched my studio business dwindle and finally had to shut it down. it's happening everywhere. now, it's getting so cheap to be able to buy quality video gear and it could easily go the same way.

$1000-$3000. That's about "going rate".

For $1000 all I would do is go out and shoot the ceremony, and maybe two hours of the reception... then full editing on the ceremony with chapter markers, and quick editing on recep.

Most of the time, I get around $1500-$2000 for a nice, basic wedding package. This include's 2 cameramen, two lav mics, full ceremony and reception editing, and one "highlights" montage. I arrive an hour and a half prior to the ceremony, and charge $50 per cameraman, per hour for any earlier. I setup, and then spend about 15-20 with the bride shooting her getting ready, while I stick my second camera man on the groom. Then I get 10mins of "artsy" shots of the venue before all the people arrive. Mic up the groom and the officiant about 30mins before ceremony... and shoot.

Unlike ALL my fellow wedding videographers down here in Dallas, my company stays till the end of the reception, no matter how long that is. It's a pain in the ass most of the time, but it's a GREAT sales closer. On the phone, the second I say that we stay till the end "because we don't want you to have to worry about us leaving before we get all the critical shots", they're hooked, and the sale's closed. I set up a meeting with them, or send them my demo, and that's that.

Most people try to bargain a bit, but I tend not to bite... I show them the demo, and explain why I charge what I charge and how it's a very fair rate, and usually they agree.

I pay $200-$250 to my other camera men, depending if they're directing, or just shooter number two, and if they have they're own equipment, or I supply. I'm usually directing, but if I double book a weekend, I have my guys on hold, and I trust them to do the job right. Hell, I trained them myself, so if they don't do a good job, it's either my fault, or the fact that we're all hungover from the late night of partying the night before ;)

People diss the wedding bus... but I say fukk it. It's decent, quick money, and it leave's me with plenty of free time to do all my other projects (well, actually I'm just getting serious with other projects - music vids and shorts).

good luck, hope this helps a bit.
