Going from DSLR to SD camcorders, because I'm an idiot

Hey, been a lurker for a couple of years, never actually bothered to post until now.

Just as with a lot of people, I've gotten started when the whole DSLR craze hit the fan. Relative cheap gear with great end results? Finally, I too can shoot movies that don't look like crappy home videos! Count me in!

I really love how these little beasts enable anyone to get into filmmaking and get awesome results, and I really can't stress enough how wonderful it is that they're compact and extremely fast to use.

Except, now I'm at a point where it annoys me, that everything looks the same. A big budget movie has the same look as some random cat video on youtube. Don't get me wrong, I love the footage from DSLRs, but right now, to me, they feel extremely boring, as every person shoots essentially with the same type of gear. Also, I've gotten slightly bothered by their sharpness lately, no idea why.

Meanwhile, I was always fond of VHS and early minidv footage, and even though that might sound stupid to a lot of people, I think they're more 'raw' and more fitting for reporting and documentary. Sure, greatly shot and graded stuff looks awesome, but I don't think docs should be as cinematic as a narrative feature. Imho, they're not meant to be.

Hence, with all this I kinda 'degraded' into shooting in SD, which I never really had the opportunity to do so, frankly. Got myself a DVX100 and a Canon XM1 (GL1) just the other day, and I'm baffled at how I've missed out on these great camcorders. Setting up things are slower, sure, and there are some limitations compared to anything newer, but I just like the images they capture. Not to mention, I'm too annoyed at this point by rolling shutter, so I just want to get away from it for a while.

We always talk about stories being the key in movies, so it really shouldn't matter what you shoot on, but lately I've noticed it more and more that both companies and users of their gears tend to lean towards visuals and technical details, instead of actual content. 4k this, 8k that, I don't really care as long as I can make something that I feel proud of, and look at it as being and enjoyable end result.

Also wow, this kind-of turned rant-ish. Sorry 'bout that.

Alas, Hi

I sort of get your point, but the ways pro content distinguishes itself from cat videos are deliberate camerawork, editing, lighting, (sometimes) art direction, grading/color correction, maybe a few other things. Just because the depth of field/sharpness are the same between the two types of content due to the cameras used doesn't mean they'll look the same if all those other factors are in place.

Indeed, but there's still that undeniable 'dslr' look to both of them, which is the major factor that annoys me. Or more like, I think It's about getting used to it way too much, in a similar manner that's happened with CG. It's become overused, and to me it lost it's magic.
