Going from AVI to PPro?!

I'm an FCP guy, so excuse me here, but I'm trying to help out a friend. He's got an AVI file (that's all I know about it), and he wants to get it into PPro to edit. Is it possible, and how the nuts would one do such an operation?
 
He should "Import" the .avi file to the project window. (Just as you would import a .mov file in FCP)
 
yeah, you just import it into the project window like you import any other item youd like to use in the project. you can even just drag and drop the file into the project window, or right into the timeline for that matter. copy and paste works as well.
 
You'll have trouble if it's an Xvid AVI, though... I've never been able to import an xvid or divx encoded avi into Premiere successfully.
